United State Presidential Election.-All | who have the interests of that great nation at heart, as well as those who only have trade relations with her, must undoubtedly congratulate the People on the wisdom of their selection in electing President Roosevelt, under whose regime, as the Chief Executive, the country has made such world-wide progress during the last three years. Piece Goods.- Now the Tientsin steamers have got into difficulties through the sudden shallowing of the river Paiho several vessels are jammed ontside the Bar and have to discharge into lighters, which means a three weeks trip instead of ten days, and tonnage here i-consequently getting scarce, which is serious so near to the close of the season. Subsequent boats will probably discharge at Chinwangtao, which Port, we understand, is now available to

other than the Mining Company's vessels. Hankow continues in the same unsatisfactory state, which is attributed largely to the adverse Exchange on this owing to financial troubles, or some complications in the Banking arrangement, very difficult for the lay mind to comprehend, especially when explained in pidgin English by a native! It does not appear to affect Szochuen, however, where a good demand is springing up both for Yarns and woven goods. Ningpo is commencing to look up a little, and is account- able for the better feeling displayed at the auctions for Cotton goods, in spite of the higher exchange. As regards the home markets, the tone in Manchester continues strong, manufacturers being, for the most part, quite independent as regards further buying for some time to come. Even in Fancies there is very little going through. Cotton is up in Liverpool to 5.44d. for Mid-American, Egyptian being quoted "nominal," whatever that means. 16,000,000 Export for the last fortnight was yards of Plain Cottons. There is no sign of giving way in the American market, the few transactions reported as having gone through for this market being at full rates. The demand for Indian Yarns has continued brisk, chiefly for the River markets and Szechuen, the No. 20s. for the latter showing an advance in prices. A large business has also been done in Japanese spinnings to arrive at improving rates, with the rising sterling exchange the local spinnings are likely to be out of it.
