ARRIVAL OF MAILS.

The French Mail of the 30th Sept. arrived, per the 8 Gregory Apcar, on the 31st ultimo; and the English Mail of the 7th October arrived, per the ss. Chusan, on the 4th inst,

"Zove time," the standard time of the China Coast, was adopted by Hongkong, Canton, and Macao on October 30th. It involved the put ting on of the clocks about 23 minutes 18 seconds.

Two Chinese were killed at Hongkong on October 15th in an unusual manner. A piece of "eares-gutter" fell on them as they were passing along the street. A report of the inquest appears in this issue.

An English officer of the Chinese Customs was murderously attacked by Chinese in the Kowloon hills, while walking to Kowloon. He beat off his assailants. Life is not quite safe yet in the country districts.

The Canton-Haukow railway has lately been, and still is, the subject of an interesting three- cornered struggle for its possession. The Chinese are moving heaven and earth to get hold of it; the Belgians, of course, have a pull; and recently the story of fresh American enter prise with regard to it has been received.

Hongkong was much exercised in mind over the North Sea outrage, and for two days talked war, expected war, and almost wished for war. There has been a good deal of talk in Hong- kong shipping circles of blockade running enterprise at Port Arthur. Some trouble with crews refusing to go has been experienced,

A new British agency is to be established at Lakon Lamnang, and will be opened by Mr. T. for the post of Consul at Hanoi has had to be Ff. Carlisle, whose departure from Bangkok postponed. He leaves Bangkok shortly for Lakon, and will remain there some months; when he is relieved he will be able to proceed to

Hanoi.

A good deal of fuss is still being made abant Masso's desire to import more rice from Canton. The Chinese there claim that Macao only wants the grain to sell over again, and that any more exports would make rice very dear to the native consumer. There is much to be argued on both sides; it seems to be a question of fast at present.
