SILK.
The
Messrs. A. R. Burkill & Son, in their Circular, dated 24th of March, state :-The home markets are quiet. Gold Kiling is quoted at 11/9 in Lon- don and in Lyons Fcs. 32.50. Raw Silk-A small business has been transacted in Tsatlees. Yellow Silk. A considerable business has been done chiefly in Mienchews and Mienyangs. decline in exchange has considerably facilitated business. Hand Filatures.-The sudden demand for this Silk, reported in our last circular, has almost entirely ceased and very little business is now reported. Steam Filatures.-One or two small transactions only to report. Tussah Fila- tures.- continue to be in good demand, prices remain unchanged. Waste Silk-Nothing doing. Prices asked for Gum Wastes are above Home ideas.
SUGAR.
The Kobe Market Report, which is dated March 15th, says More is doing in Hongkong Refined in the confident anticipation of an increase in the Comsumption Tax. About 10,000 bags are report- ed sold at an advance of 25 sen over former figures. The market is steady. German Beet.- The same influence has affected values, which are still higher, but there is absolutely no stock in first hands. Russian is now quoted at Tls. 11.70. Osaka Refined.-The market shows an upward tendency. At the last Auction some 10,000 bags we re-disposed of at an advance of 30 at 35 sen over last sales.
RICE.
The quotations for rice in the Kobe Market according to the latest circular issued by the Chamber of Commerce at that port are as follows:- No. 1, cleaned, new crop, yen 6.90 to yen 7; No. 1 rough, yen 5.80 to yen 5.20.
OPIUM.

COAL.
Since March 12th the arrivals of coal at Hongkong have been about 35,000 tons of Japan coal, all sold; 10,000 tons of Cardiff coal; 10,000 tons from Barry, and 2,500 from Hongay. 6,600 tons, sold, are expected from Japan by the Foosheng and Oscar II.
COTTON.
According to the latest Market Report of the Hiogo and Osaka Chamber of Commerce, the market has been generally active, and a fair business is reported. The quotations for Amer- ican staple are still very much under home prices. There is no unsold stock of Chinese at present in the market, and the closing quotations are about Tis. 32 per picul for best, and Tls. 28 to Tls. 29 for inferior kinds. The prices for Indian Staple have advanced in sympathy with home market. Stocks in Osaka and Kobe were estimated on March 15th to be:-Chinese, 26,833 bales; Indian, 40,219 bales; American, 10,212 square bales and 5,612 round bales.

SHARE REPORT.
HONGKONG, 31st March, 1904.- Since date of our last the market has been somewhat more active and a fair business has been put through chiefly in Indos and China Sugars both of which have been in demand at rising rates. The market generally bas ruled firmer with more buyers than has been the case for some time past.
BANKS. Hongkong and Shanghais with a falling sterling exchange here, and a further rise is the London quotation of £1 (making the rate £62), the demand reported in our last at 8607 was not met and the rate quickly rose to $610, $6122, 8615 and $6174 without bringing out any but very small lots of shares. At time of writing the market is steady at $6171 to 1620 with probable buyers. Nationals are still en- quired for at $354 without bringing out any
shares.

MARINE INSURANCES.--Unions steady at $470 with a small business and close with buyers. China Traders have been placed at $56. The Northern Insurances and Cantons remain quiet without any local business.
FIRE INSURANCES.-Hongkongs have been placed at $285 and Chinas at $93, market clos- ing steady for both stocks,
SHIPPING. Hongkong, Canton and Macaos have ruled steady with buyers at $26 and no sellers except of very small lots. Indo-Chinas have been dealt in to some extent at $88, 8881. $89 and $90 for cash, and at $91, $92, 893 and $94 for May, June, July and August delivery; the market closes strong at $90 to $91 cash and at about equivalent rates forward. China and Manilas are somewhat easier with sellers at $22 after small sales at that and $224. Douglases have improved to $34 without sales. Star Ferries have been placed at $31 (old) and $184 (now) closing steady. Shell Transports after small sales at 19/- close with sellers.
