THE DEPRECIATION OF STOCKS. Messrs. J. P. Bisset & Co. in a special circular, call attention to the depreciation of stocks. They state Of the total amount of depreciation amounting to TIs. 13,969,552, we are glad to say that only a small proportion is borne by Shanghai. In the case of the Shell Transport and Trading Co., showing a loss of over 7 millions, only an infinitesimal amount is borne by Shanghai, and the same refers to the loss of nearly two millions in the Chinese Engineering and Mining Co., Ld. the principal depreciation in which this port is conce ned is in S. C. Farnham, Boyd & C ',, Ld., and Shanghai & Hongkow Wharf Co., Ld., amount- ing to 5 millions. This is almost entirely bone here, and we have to bear a very heavy propor- tion of the depreciation in Indo-Chinas. Agai st this may be put almost in its entirety the appreci- ation in Maatschappij, &c. in Langkats. Shanghai shares only to a very slight extent in the depreci- ation in Hongkong Bank lares, as it enjoys little of the appreciation in Marine Insurances' with the exception of North Chinas and Yangtszes, the greater portion of which latter stocks it benefits from. In Land shares the only stock that interests Shanghai to any extent is its own Land Investment Co, and this depreciation is largely borne here.

In summing up, we make the depreciation borne by Shanghai on stocks gen- erally on our table as being somewhere in the neighbourhood of three millions of taels. Our readers must know it is impossible to give accur- ate figures. Notwithstanding tue continued tightness of money which we have experienced within the last five or six months and more particularly during the last month, stocks have remained steady and fairly strong at or about bur December quotations. Given peace and a little easiness in money, we look for much higher rates in most of our stocks.

HOMEWARD FREIGHTS. Messrs. Wheelock & Co. in their Report of the 21st instant state: -There is nothing of interest to report in our homeward freight market during the past fortnight, and ex orts of any deseription are practically at a stan·lstill; a state of affairs which is large y due to the instability of exchange. For London and the Continent: The only boats advertised on the berth besides the mails are the 8.8. Nestor, sailing for London and Antwerp on the 28th, and the 8.8. Radnorshire for Havre, London, Hamburg and Antwerp on the 30th inst.
