chwang merchants are doing nothing and it is rumoured that the godown of one of the largest merchants there has been destroyed by fire. There is nothing doing for Cheffo which ha been quite upset for the time being y heavy rains and floods which have caused a great loss of lives and serioua damage to godowns and Bargoes. The River markets remain quiet. Manchester market is reported flat with production diminishing fast. Here and there we hear of a few sales having been made, evidently from stick for this market and apparently let go at a sina profit. The Liver- pool market is quiet with American Cotton quoted 6.54d. and Egyptian Cotton 9jd. The Export from England] for the fortnight ending 25th in- stant was fifteen million yards. SHARE REPORTS. HONGKONG, 7th August 1903.-We have no cusiness to report from the date of our last bricalar until fterte August Monday holiday, since when a fair general business has been transacted notwithstanding the further rise in sterling exchange and consequent continued, and even accentuated, tightness of

money.

BANKS.-

Hongkong and Shanghais hure declined to $675 without Business, although as mentioned in one lost report buyers would b› plentiful if financing the stock was easier. Nationals continue in demand at $27 to 8271, but very few shares an forthcoming at that rate. MARINE INSURANCE Unions have been placed at $500, China, Traders at SG11, and Cantons at $180. In North-Chiras and Yung- tszes there is no local business to report.

FIRE INSURANCES. Hongkongs continue quiet with small sales at $273, while Chinas have found bayers at $$7 closing with buyers

at $87.

SHIPPING.-Hosgkong Cauton and Macaos, after small sales at $37 exliv. paid on 4th inst close with a few shares offering at that rate. Indo-Chinas bave ruled vy dull, the price de- clining to $92 with little or no business to report, China Mauilas are enquired for in a small way at $20. Douglases bare ruled neglected at $ti. Star Ferries have found buyers at $274 for old and $17 for new shares, Shell Transports hare been dealt in to some extent at 248,, 23s. 6d.. and 238, closing with sellers at 23×, 6d.

REFINERIES-China Sugars continue steady to strong at $95 after in portant sales at that rate and at $94. Luzons uschinged and without business.

MINING. - No business for change to report under this heading.

DOCKS, WHARVES AND GODOWNS.-Horg kong and Whampoa Docks came into request immediately after the settlements, and a demand at $212 and 8213 being not met, the rate quickly rese to $215, at which last rate a fa`r un bir of thares changed hands; later, the d and con inning, $216 was paid and after a fair business at that the market closes firm with buyers. Hongkong Mort and Godowns have been placed in small lots at $88 and continue in demand at that rate. New Amoy Docks unchanged and without business. Farnhams are quoted in Shangbai at $157.
