V.R.C.'S SMOKING CONCERT.

Realising expectations the smoking concert held on Saturday evening in the gymnasium of the Victoria Recreation Club proved to be a most enjoyable function. Accommodation had been provided for about 260 people, and when the concert began not a seat was unoccupied and late arrivals had to be content with standing room. Before the programme was discussed Mr. B. H. B. Mitchell, Hon. Treasurer, said that in the absence of the Hon. President, H.E. Sir H. A Blake and the Chairman, Hon F. H May, he had been asked to take the chair, and had very much pleasure in doing so. They all knew that the typhoons last year were very disastrous to the lab, and when the gymnasium was blown down the question arose -Should they erect another one. The points were carefully discussed, and the Committee were unanimous that the gymnasium was deces- laco The work was at once put in hand, and eir being there on the present occasion was afficient proof it had been carried out effect-

The concert opened with an overture by the orchestra, 14 strong and under the conductor- ship of Mr. L. R. Ruchwaldy who was entirely responsible for the programme. The piece was nicely played, and drew hearty applause. Mr. G. 1. Ruby followed with a song, "Three Women to Every Man," which in turn was

noceeded by a banjo solo, the player, Mr. H. Proposal to offer premium Shoolbred, making a hitat once. "The Carnival" was sung by Mr. J. H. Oxberry, whose voice suffers from lack of training. A piccolo solo by Mr. C. D. Silas was well executed, and a capi at rendering of Monckton's "Under the Deodar was given by Mr. F. G. Whittick. A cell solo by. ur. G. Koeing had sympathetic treatment at the performer's hands, and a solo, on the violin by Mr. F. C. Barlow had to be repeated in response to calls for an encore. Comic songs by Mr. H. 8. Spurge and Mr. R. G. Heokford, who made a very good impression, brought the first part of the programme to a close.

Several new artistes figured in the second part. Of these the most successful, judging from the reception he received, was Mr Burnett, a really clever comedian. Mr. Buchwaldy de. lighted his audience by a legardemain exhi- bit on of undoubted m rit, and Mr. W. Ander- son made a very favourable appearance as an oboe soloist, a clarionette solo by Mr. A S. Tuxford being also nicely rendered. Mr. Whit- tiok sang again, "The Bedouin's Love Song " this time, and Mr. Koenig played another 'coello solo. Mr. W. T. Burgess, who is not unknown iu amateur circles in the Clony, impersonated some celebrities of the variety stage, and Mr.

Prior to the singing of the National Anthem," Mr. Mitchell thanked the performers for their individual contributions to the pro- gramme and the visitors for turning out in such gratifying numbers. It was on the tapis that another concert should be held soon. "Success to the V. R. C." was pledged, and cheers for Mr. Mitchell and Mr. White, who had worked zealously to ensure the success of the concert, terminated the proceedings,

As to the idea of Japan revoking this order, Sir W.
