H.K,C.C. v. Mɛ. G. MOORE'S NAVAL XI. Itwasoriginally arranged that the Club should play HLM.S. Blenheim, but, as the latter found it mpossible to raise an XI., Mr. G. Moore kindly got up a team composed of men from various ships in the harbour and an enjoyable, but un. expectedly one-sided, game was the result, on the frd inst. The Club apparently had a strong side and it was generally thought that they would have no difficulty in defeating their opponents; however, the glorious uncertainty of the game was once i re manifested, and the Naval team gained the easiest of victories by 89 runs. The Club won the toss and batted first. W. E, and J. T. Dixon opened the batting and Broadbent and Toulmin bowled. W. E. Dixon left at 7, and W. Dixon took his place. The score was taken to 2 when J. T. was well caught by Mahon in the slips. Fawcett again failed and Maitland gave little trouble, though he stayed in some time. W. Dixon was playing very well and had scored 21 when he was unfortunate enough to be given out, caught at the wicket off his leg! Fanshawe hit up a useful 23, but none of the others did much, and the innings closed for a paltry 86. Some of the men had rather bad luck-notably W. Dixon-bat the p or total was chiefly due to bad batting. Toulmin and Mahon-who superseded Broadbent-bowled well, the former taking 6 wickets for 41 and the latter 4 for 17.

The Naval XI began batting with Toulmin and Pringle, and W. and J. T. Dixon started the bowling. Toulwin was c. and b, off the first ball sent down, Lut Moore and Pringle tock the score (o 22 before the former was beautifully bowled by W. Dixon for 16. The next two wickets fell quickly, and with four good wickets down for 44, it lo ked to be anybody's game. On Gouldsmith joining Pringle, however a determined stand was made, and, despite several › óhanges in the bowling, the Club total was passed without furth logs. Indeed, it was not until the score had seached 105 that Tringle's invaluable and well-played innings of 43 was brought to a close by another beautiful ball of W. Dixon's. Gouldsmith continued to hit hard and well, till, though he had played a great game for his side, he was eventually disposed of for a brilliant 64, which contained two 6's and eight 4's. Mahon and Money gare some trouble, but the innings closed for 175. The Clab fielding was by no means good, and, as usual, catches were missed. W. Diron was again the most successful bowler and took 5 wickets for 54 runs. With rather over an hour left for play, the Club went in again and certainly did better than at their first attempt, as they succeeded in making 118 for 7 wickets before the bell rang at 5 o'clock. This improvement was mainly dus to an excellent innings of 53 by Fawcett, and it was pleasant to see his return to form after a somewhat protracted period of comparative in, activity: W Dixon again made double figures-

as also did his brother Walter. Constantine was the most successful bowler in this innings, taking 3 wickets for 28, but there was a falling

51

The Rugby section of the H.K.F.C. met the Navy on the Happy Valley ground on the 3rd inst., when an excellent game was witnessed. The Club team was in fiue fettle and gained a victory by a goal and a try to nil, being in better form than in any previous match this seasou. Clark got in after a good run by Jordan in the first half, while Barnes, taking a very difficult pass in the second period, added another 3 points. The Navy third line was rot as good as usual nd was altogether upset by the rigorous tactics of the Club. The mest prominent players among the victorious team were Pearce, Heath, Barnes, Padday, Hallifax, Campbell, and Clark-the latter of whom was in splendid form. The best on the Navy side were Pringle (as usual) and Corsar, who played a sterling game at full-back.

The match was won for the Club by the excellence of their half and three-quarter back play. The Navy was rather stronger forward, but the Club forwards were good, though they passed a little too loosely. The Navy halves were not as strong as usual, and indeed it has been suggested that a better team behind the fciam might have been chosen from the ships here just now. Both teams wero fairly tired out by the end of the game, which was 35 minutes each way, The Club's victory was enthusiastical y r ceived. Teams :--

:

Club.-Lie ut. Campbell, full back; I. Graham, P. N. Heath, T. E. Pearce, and O. T. Barnes, three-quarters; J. P. Jordan and A. C. Fadday, balves; E. R. Hallifax, V. Cooper, W. Chard, E. D. Ú. Wolfe, P. W. Goldring, P. 8. Jameson, A. Boyd, and W. W. Clark, forwards.

Navy-Corsar (Albion), back; Lloyd (Ocean), Herbert (Blenheim), Pringle (Taitot), and Young (Goliath), three-quarters; Lewin (Cressy) anl Hallett (Phænia', halves; Tweedie and Hughes (Albion), Kilvert, Turle, Calvert, and Dorman, (Glory', Bissett (Ocean), and Barnard (Talbot), forwards.

Mr. Bird refereed, to the general satisfaction.

The Rugby football match on the 8th inst. be- tween the H.K.F.C. and H.M.8. Albion ended in favour of the latter by 2 goals to a goal and a try.

HOCKEY.

On New Year's Day the Hongkong Hookey Club opened its Shield match season with a game v. H.M.S. Glory, and though compelled to play two substitutes, one of whom had only come down to referee, achieved a handsome · victory by 5 goals to 2. The team played a much improved game, working very well together, and Hooper and Chater (the latter of whom - shot two goals from half-back) in particular · distinguished themselves. Both of them have · been awarded their 1st XI colours- the onlý ones given so far. The following was the winners' team : —

B. W. Gray, goal; L. Murphy and Mr.. Donkin, R.N., backs; C.P. Chater, Lt. Quennell, A O.D., and A. E. Ransom, R.N., halves; J...
