CRICKET.

H.K.C C. V. THE NAVY.

the latter was c. and b." Smith, who followed stayed in with Rimington till 1 o'clock. After tiin Smith was bowled for a capital 17 and W. E. D.xon succeeded him. As did not stay long, however, and Powell took his place. In the meantime, Rimington had continued to play cxcellent cricket and his invaluable innings was not 'brought to a close until the respectable total of score had reached the 146. Too much praise cannot be given to Rimington for his really good display, and he was undoubtedly the saviour of his side. Towards the end of bis innings he also had to requisition the aid of a runner on account of lameness. With no addition to tte score. Cooper, the list man, was caught and the innings thus terminated for a total of 146. 1 be Club battig was disappointing on the whole and Rimington and J. T. and W. Lizon wero, the only men to do themselves jcs.ice. The filding was certainly not up to the standard expected of the Navy and the bowling showed signs of wear-doubtless New Year festivites had something to do with both these failings.

|

It was generally thought that the Club total was hardly big enough for the Naval men and, under normal circumзtruces, it is probable that it would not have been so. However in this department of the game, also, sigus of more than ordinary dissipation were not waiting. and men nsually safe for runs were dismissed at small c ́s'. Garde and Pringle were the first pair of batsmen and J. T. Dixon and Powell started the bowling. Guide played well and looked like making a big score, but Pringle was palpably "under the weather." Haring made 22. out of 33, by excellent cricket, cleau bowled by W. Dizon Garde was who had superseded Lis brother, And Moore came in. The last comer was also out f form and did not stay long. In the meantime, Pringle was baten aud bowled by Rimington who had displaced Powell, and B.dwell followed: Those who lememt ered many excellent innings played by Bedwell a few seasons ago wete'pre- pared to see some good batting; it must be said at once, however, that their expectations were nt at all fulfilled and the new-comer show、d no signs of his old form and, though he scored 12 fans, there was but lit le skill displayed in the getting of them. Blair hit hard for a'some. what luc y 12 but no one else din much, and the innings closed for the poor total of 103-43 behind the Club's total. The Club flelding was good on the whole but inability to hold a c teh was again apparent in ver- tain quarters. W. Dixon bowled uncommonly well and took 5 wickets for 19. The innings closed at 4..0 and the Club went in again for 40 minutes batting. Two wickets fell quickly but W. E. Dixon and Corper played well and to k the score to 79 without being separated. Both hit hard and well, especially perhaps the former, who made the top core of the match. The Naval fielding was again at fault, in fact it was worse in the second innings than the first and several catches were missed. Garde did not put on his best bowlers and, indeed, this innings did not appear to be taken at all seriously by the Naval team. Altogether the game was av enjoyable one, the chief feature of which war the prowess of the Dixen family. By the kindness of the Admirals-and Officers, the massed bands of the fleet, under Band- master Ashley, played an excellent selection, and the match was graced by the presence of a feir sprinkling of ladi s. The following are the full scores and analysis

The above match was played ou New Year's Day and, after an interesting and enjoyablo game, resulted in a win for the Club by ele en rubs. An attempt was made to begin the LONG JUMP (confined). 1st prize presented match at 10 30 but, as usual, there were many 1.te-comers and it was ten minutes past eleven when Mckinlay seut down the first bull for the Navy. Ward won the toss and Radcliffe and Maitland opened the batting, while Fitch was the other bowler. Maitland left without scoring and W. Dixon partnered Radcliffe. By steady play the score was taken to 38, when Radcliffe was caught for a patient 13. He had tho wisfortune to hurt his fot, one of Fitch's fast ones hitting him on the instep, and this uufortunate circumstance doubtless handicapped him a good deal. Towards the end of bis inuings he was obliged to get a man to ran for him and his foot bec tuo so painful that he was unable to field, Fawcett followed but lost Dixon's company at 40. J. T. ixon filled his brother's place and the score was taken to 57 before Faw- Ward succumbed catt was bowled by Fitch.
