CANTON, 10th May:-The deficit in the first arop proves to be larger than anticipated and is now estimated at 70 to 75 per cent. Owing to the dry, hot weather, the first reelings are of considérably better quality than is usual in this production. The second crop will also suffer by the protracted drought, but to what extent cannot yet be ascertained. Settlements in new eason'a Silk are still very moderate, dealers

and unsteady. The immediate causes of this fall- ing off are to be found in the rapid forcing up of prices in the interior by native dealers, the dis- turbed state of the consuming centres, and the recent slump in the Shanghai and Northern mar- kets. Buyers do not believe in present prices and anticipating a much lower range of values later on, continue to hold aloof. Importers, mean- while, are becoming very anxious, but looking at the paucity of present stocks both in first and second hands, the moderate scale of supplies, higher prices ruling in Bombay, and uncertainty of exchange, there is no apparent canse for alarm unless a sudden and unexpected influx of goods inundates us from Shanghai.
