Mr. P. Eduljee says in his Report, dated Hong- kong, 28th February :- Nothing of interest has occurred during the past fortnight; the market has been dull throughout and particularly so dur- ing the last week, with only a trifling demand for special chops to meet immediate country orders. Despite a falling and uncertain exchange, holders are anxious sellers, and would willingly meet the market, but for anything outside special require- ments dealers will not offer at any price. Values during the interval have suffered some change and may be quoted fully a dollar lower on pre- vious quotations. Latest Bombay telegrams make that market steady on a basis of 5) annas for China No. 20s.
Very little or insufficient rain has fallen in the interior to assist the farmers in planting new rice, and with the recent appearance of cholera in and around Canton, the prospects of a brik Spring trade are very remote.
Local Manufacture:- The local Mill continues to run full time to meet previous forward con- tracts; no spot cargo is available, but we hear of a sale of about 250 bales No. 108., at $92, June- July delivery.
Japanese Yarn:-The recent rise in exchange renders any business in this thread quite. un- practicable..
Raw Cotton:-The market for Indian staple in the country has been very dull and business con- tinues to drag. Exporters to Japan are still in large evidence, and what with heavy direct ship ments from Bombay during the last month, most- ly on consignment account, the markets there are now being inundated. Sales of 17 bales Super- fine Machine Ginned Bengal at from $231 to $22) are reported as the only business during the in- terval, leaving a very heavy stock of nearly 10,500 bales on the market. China descriptions are quiet | but steady with little or no business to report.
Quotations are Indian $17 to $24 and China $27 to $29.
Exchange on India, after touching Rs. 136 and receding again to Rs. 133, close to-day at Rs. 134 || for T/T and Rs. 134 for Post. On Shanghai 73) and on Yokohama 13 per cent. premium.
The undernoted business in imported and local spinuings is reported from Shanghai for the fort- night ended 8th instant, viz.:
Indian:-Total sales 5,480 bales, including 3,140 bales No. 'Os., 60 bales No. 12s., 200 bales No. 14., 575 bales No: 168., and 1,405 bales No. 20s., prices remaining with little alteration as those last given and market closing steady. Unsold stock was estimated at about 30,000 bales.
Japanese-A fair business at steady prices. some 1,500 bales changing lands on the basis of 118. 85 to 90 for No. 168., and Tls. 37 to 92, for No. 20s, market closing firm.
Local:-Good enquiry at firmer rates, sales amounting to about 1,000 bales No. 16s., at Tls. 851 and 1,000 bales No. 148., at from Tls. 823 to Tls. 84, market closing strong.
