CRICKET.
H.K.C.C. v. BATTLESHIPS' XI. This match on the 8th¡inst. ended in a victory for the Club on the first innings, owing entirely to Dixon's 62, the other members of the vic torious team performing very indifferently In their second innings the Battleships' team knocked up some runs, the Club apparently being satisfied with their victory on the first venture. MACHINE GUN CO.'S CHALLENGE SHIELD COMPETITION.
The annual competition for the Challenge Shield between the Machine Gun Companies of the Volunteer Corps, which was held on the Tai Hang Rifle Range on Saturday, 8th inst., resulted in a win for "C" Company, the previous holders of the trophy, who beat "B" Company by 28 points and "A" Company by 72 points. Marks were awarded as follows:--

The visitors to the City Hall Library and Museum last week incinded 239 non-Chinese and 129 Chinese to the former and 52 non- to the latter Chinese and 2,845 Chinese institution.
The large numbers of people whom the band performances attract to the Recreation Ground every Wednesday are the best thanks His Excellency the Acting Governór could desire for his institution of this pleasant form of public amusement. On the 12th inst, a numerous crowd assembled to listen to the excellent music of the 2nd Royal Welsh Fusiliers, whose selections were greeted with frequent applause by their audience.

A portion of the wall between the tenements Nos. 2 and 4, Eastern Street collapsed on the 11th inst., and two Chinese were injured by the falling debris. Both were removed to hospital.
Lieut. W. Nicholson, H.K.V.C., has been granted twelve months' leave of absence; and Lient. T. Skinner, H,K.V.C., leave of absence from the 25th February to the 15th March.

CAPTAIN'S CUP AND
In spite of want of rain, the course was in very fair order and many creditable scores were handed in. The winner of the Pool returned three excellent cards and fully deserves a substantial reduction of handicap. The Captain of the Club was successful in qualifying for his own prize with a good score, which would have been considerably better but for one or two mistakes. This completes the series of mouthly com- petitions for Mr. Palmer's Cup, to secure final possession of which the winners of the year, nine in number, will have to do battle at an early date, CAPTAIN'S CUP.

at Shanghai of the steamer Loongmoon they will not be able to reach this port in time to open this evening as originally was intended. Their season will commence on Monday.
The twin-screw steam dredger Canton River, as she now lies in Hunghom Bay off the pre- mises of the Hongkong and Whampoa Dock Co., Ld., will be offered for sale by public auction at half-past two o'clock this afternoon in Messrs. Hughes & Hough's sales rooms, No. 20, Des Voeux Road.
Dr. Bateson Wright, Headmaster of Queen's College and local Hon, Sec. of the Oxford Local Examinations, informs us that 81 can- didates have entered for the Oxford Local Examination next July-16 Senior, of whom two are girls, 40 Junior, and 25 Prelimininary, of whom one is a girl.
By a fire which broke out in a carpenter's the 8th inst. 85 shop at Hanghom Docks on 86 damage was done to the extent of about $2,000. The loss is partly covered by insurance. The fire was discovered by Sergeant Gordon, Hung. 87 hom, who gave the alarm and received the 90 prompt assistance of some of the European 91 employees of the Dock Company, under Mr.
S. Wilson, in subduing the outbreak.

CANTON, 1st March :-Re-reels.In spite of a good demand for this class of Silk, only a few transactions took place, owing to the extreme scarcity of stock. A lot of ten bales No. 1 was bought at $635 together with ten bales No. 2 at $620. Also a settlement of No. 3 is reported at $600. Filatures.-The activity ruling on our market before the holidays has fully continued since the re-opening, about 900 bales having been bought for Europe. As was to be foreseen in view of the paucity of stock, prices have steadily advanced, and holders now ask a further rise of $10 to $20 for the small stock they have left on hand. Waste.-Steam Waste has remained in very active enquiry at daily advancing prices. Sales have been made in Extra Selected up to $115 for opened and $1'8 for unopened. Dealers have very little stock on hand and there is every probability of the season closing with very short supply.
