Mr. 1'. Eduljee says in his Report, dated Hong- kong. 14th January:-The market has not yet opene, but the few bales noted below may be considered as "Complimentary or New Year Settlements, and are no indication of the market. The outlook, however, is far from discouraging, and in repeating our late quotations must advise that they are stronger. The turn that the next week or two will bring forth in Shanghai on resumption of business is looked forward to with impatience, as on it depends in a great measure the tone of our market and the re-arrangement of values.
Local Manufacture ::-No business has been reported in the products of the Hongkong Cotton Spinning, Weaving and Dyeing Mills.
Japanese Yarn Nothing doing.
-
Raw Cotton: The holidays have greatly interfered with business, and with the exception of 200 bales good to superfine Bengal booked for the New Year at from $21 to $23 the market has remained practically closed. Stocks are steadily accumulating by incessant heavy arrivals and now aggregate close up on 10,000 balos out of which about 2,000 are now being shipped off to Japan. There has been nothing done in Chinese Cotton. Quotations are Indian $18 to $23} and China $28 to 30.
Exchange on India closes to-day at Rs 137% for T/T and Rs. 137 for Post, on Shanghai 724 and on Yokohama 114 per cent. premium.
The undernoted business in imported and local spinnings is reported from Shanghai during the fortnight ended 9th instant, viz.: —
Indian Total sales 5,969 bales, comprising 225 bales of No. 188., 1,350 bales of No. 10s., 150 bales of No. 12s., 780 bales of No. 16s., and 3.404 bales of No. 20s., prices showing little or no alterations from those last given and market closing steady. The unsold stock was estimated at 32,000 bales.
Japanese-Market firm and sales of about 1,500 bales are recorded on the basis of Tls, 85 to 88 for No. 168., and Tls. 87 to 89 for No. 20s.
