It is notified in the Gazette that the Commis. sioner of Customs at Shanghai telegraphed yesterday to Acting Commissioner E. V. Brenan that the ports of Macao, Kobe and Osaka are declared infected.

A Seoul telegram of the 9th inst. to the Jiji states that the American demand for the conces- sion of the Keishu and Wiju gold mines has been successful. The Corean Foreign Minister protests against the concession, but the Empreror has given his sanction and it is understood that the mines will become American property.

The Times of India reports that the Chinese Commissioners have some difficulty in under- standing the references to latitudes and longi- tudes, in connection with the Burmah-Chinese Boundary Commission and also to water-sheds in the agreement concluded between the two Governments. SILK.

CANTON, 11th May.-Silk.-Tsatlees and Re- reels. No settlements are reported. Although prices of Re-reels are about $40 per picul lower than a fortnight ago they are about $60 per picul too high compared with the prices of filatures. Filatures. Lyons cables reporting a better feeling induced buyers generally to secure the greatest quantity of refusals that could be bad. Purchases amounted to about 1,500 bales during the first 5 days of the fortnight and prices stiffened quickly. The higher prices asked by the dealers seem, however to have checked the movement, and our market is again very dull and prices weak and irregular. The first crop is estimated at 3/1,000 bales and the silk now coming in decidedly better than the first samples which were shown two weeks ago.

Cocoon prices are firm and the cost of the new silk is about 100 Dollars over the price obtainable: We append quotations i Canton, with laying down cost in London and Lyons, Exchange 4 months' sight, 1/11, and Fcs. 2.50) per Dollar:-

Mr. P. Eduljee says in his Report, dated Hongkong, 25th May-More enquiry has been experienced during greater part of past fort- night, and holders have made some fair sales, particulars of which are noted below. No material improvement is noticeable in values, but on the other hand no further decline has taken place, although dealers throughout the interval have been bearing the market with persistent energy. The shortness of supplies alone has enabled inporters to maintain last quotations. Our estimate of stocks shows a falling off, and, as late contracts have been practically fulfilled, still smaller receipts may be expected during the next few weeks. To meet actual wants, we are of opinion that dealers will shortly be compelled to place further orders, as the quantity of gooda now coming forward for sale has fallen away to a comparatively small compass and is insufficient for requirements. We close quiet but steady, and on the whole there is a better feeling apparent in this market, and a steady general demand appears to be within measurable distance of resumption and a change for the better should not be far off.

The salient feature of the fortnight has been the revival in the enquiry of No. 12s. Buyers complain about the deterioration in quality of a hitherto superior favourite chop, and hence a great discrepancy is observable in prices of this count.

Local Manufacture:-No business has as yet been reported in the production of the Hongkong, S., W. and Dyeing Mills.

Japanese Yarn:Has continued in the same steady request, and at the moment there is an excited demand. Spot stocks are exhausted anp the bulk of såles 'given below are for June-July
