COURSE OF THE HONGKONG Opium MarKET,
was only 81,327 against $12,254 last year, the return really shows a healthy expansion, beri illustrated by The sale of Adhesive Stampa, which amounted to 84,170 ■gainst $2,162 iu 1899. Other items which indicate the course of trade, Bills of Exchange, Billa of Lading and Policies of Insurance have slightly increased. At the Commandant's parade in connection with the Hongkong Volunteer Corps several of the officers and men who hail from the Emerald Isle observed St. Patrick's Day by wearing a sprig of Shamrock in their helmets. There seems to be an impression that this is a conces. sion granted only to Irish Regiments. This, however, is a mistaken idea, as the following passage from the Corps Orders for this week will show:-Notification. The following ex- tract from Garrison Orders, dated 15th March, 1900, is published for general infomation. No. 8-Her Majesty orders that on 8t. Patrick's Day all ranks in Irish Regiments wear asia dis- tinction a sprig of shamrock in their head treas, Mar. 23 1025 also that all Trishmen, whether serving in Irish Regiments or net, be allowed to do so. Autho- rity W. O. Telegram, dated 13th instant. The General Officer Commanding directs compliance with this order.
