MISCELLANEOUS.
A proposal is reported from Manila to found a branch of an important San Francisco bank there and the project is said to be well on its way towards realisation.
The Medical Officer of Health reports two cases of Plague, with one death, in the limits of the oclony of Hongkong during the week end. ing February 17. There were also two imported cases of smallpox.
We quoted some remarks of a correspondent Wei-bai- on our Chinese Regiment at wei. Another observer writes that a most striking feature is the aptitude the native non- commissioned officers show in handling the raw recruits. The regiment presents a fine appear anoa on parade. The average height is 5ft. 7in., and the conduct of the men is the subject of very little complaint in the neighbourhood.
On the evening of Saturday, January 20th, the Peking Amateur Dramatic ociety gave its second entertainment at the British Legation Theatre. A number of Tientsin people remained over from Lady Macdonald's ball to attend, and all say they were well repaid for so doing. A "tripla bill" programme was excellently rendered, and great credit is due to Mr. Brout for the management of the entire programme.

MR. H. Prince Waldemar of Deumark is be- ing well entertained at Shanghai. On the 12th inst. he was to receive the Tantai, the Consular Body, and the Municipal Councillors, at the Danish Consulate, and in the evening he was to be entertained at dinner by the representative of the Great Northern Telegraph Company. On the 13th the Danish community was to give a fáte at the Masonic Hall in his honour; on the 14th inst the Danish Acting Consul, Mr. N. Laptow, was to give a reception at the Coun- try Club; and in the evening the Prince was to banquet with the Tanki.
The Danish cruiser Valkyrien visited Foo chow on the 4th inst. The Captain, H. R. H. Prince Waldemar of Denmark, visited Foochow accompanied by 16 officers, where a suitable re- ception awaited his landing. A detachment os the Viceroy's body-guard with their band es- oorted him to the Russian Consulate, where he was to be the guest of Consul-General and Madame Popoff. H. R. H. made good use of his time during his stay in the port. He re- ceived and returned the visit of the Viceroy with whom he took Liffin, received the foreign con- sula, went over the Arsenal and exchanged calls with the Admiral of the Peiyang flet. On the afternoon of the 6th instant, His Royal High- ness Prince Waldemar of Denmark, accompan- ied by theConsul-General for Russia, visited in detail the Mamoi Arsenal and the newly built cruiser ien KWei, launched last year. Highness was shown over the Arsenal by Mou. sieur Doyere himself and by His Excellency the Titiao Chen, specially delegated by the Viceroy. His Highness seemed to be highly interested by his visit, making the remark that he never expected to find at Foochow such an important establishment and such extensive works: Echo.

THE HONGKONG WEEKLY PRESS AND
The Weihaiwei correspondent of the N. C. Daily News writes that the Chinese Regiment there has recently appeared in its own uniform. Hitherto the men have worn blue cotton tunics with red sashes, with a black cotton for dress. Now they wear a tunic and trousers, Chinese pattern, but without over drawers (t'uo ku), of an iron-grey frieze with brass buttons, a row on either side of the chest, a red sash and a blue turban. Foot wear is not yet to hand, but it is understood that the ordinary ammunition boot worn by Mr. Atkins at home, will be served out | bere. Putties the same material as the rest of the uniform, it should be mentioned, are also worn, and each man is furnished with an over- cost to match. The men look well in their new rig out and appear in it more frequently when off parade than they used to do in the old make- shifts. Certainly they look much better than did the Japanese soldiers dressed after the Enropean fashion Indeed, the 1st Chinese compares favourably in appearance with the Japanese infantry regiments once in garrison
• here. Just at present many of the men are away on leave varying from a fortnight to two months, and this week being New-Year weok. drill is suspended.
It is stated by a Japanese paper that the Russian warships Rurik, Dmitry Donskoy, Vla dimir Monomak, Gremiastchy Olvazny, Zabiaka, Mandjour, Rossio, and another cruiser were assembled at Masampo, Korea on the 7th inst., and that they remain in the neigbourhood of a Korean port.
Baron d'Anethan, the Belgian Minister and doyen of the Diplomatic Corps. is now in Kobe, where he is staying with Mr. W. F. K. Fearon, the Belgian Consul. The Barone-s d'Anethan, it may be remembered, is sister to Mr. H. Rider Haggard, the novelist. She has herself written a novel or two.
We are informed, says the China Gusette, that three Japanese gentlemen travelling in Kiangai province, on a mission of exploration and in- vestigation into trade, have been severely mal treated near Nan Chang-fa, the capital of the province. The Japanese Consul at Hankow, accompanied by a Japanese military doctor who happened to be there at the time, have proceeded to the scene of the outrage. Two of the gen. tlemen were named Taganouchi and Hashimoto; the name of the third we have not le rnt, but we understand that the Japanese Government is not disposed to allow its subjects to be outraged by Chinese with the same apathy as the British Government regards the murder and martyrdom of its citizens.
