SOVEREIGNS, Bank's Buying Ru Gold Leaf, 100 fiue perifs --
JOINT STOCK SHARES. HONGKONG, 22nd December. The market has ruled quieter during the week and business restricted. hates, however, continue steady, to strong except in Banks and a few minor stocks which show a decline. A private meeting of Oliver and Queen Mine shareholders, is üdver. tised for the 17th instant.
BANKS.-Hongkong and Shanghais have been very dull and with sellers and no buyers the rat gradually fell to 340 per cent. prom. The decline was assisted by a drop in the Lon- don rate to £58.10. Market closes quiet at quotation. Nationals continue on offer at $291 without finding buyers,
MARINE INSURANCES.-Continue neglected with no sales to report
FIRE INSURANCES.-Hongkongs have chang ed hands at $3274 and $330 and Chinas at $88, both closing steady at those rates.
SHIPPING. Hongkong, Canton and Macaos have found small buyers at $31, but sellers at $30 rule the market at time of closing. In ös have changed hands at $82 and $824, closing steady at the latter rate. Douglases with sales at $52 cash and $53 for the settlement close with sellers at the latter rate. China Manilas continue steady, but without business. China Mutuals after small sales of £5 paid up at par have been done at $4.15 and close with buyers. at the latter rates and no sellers.
MINING. Panjoms continus very dull and out of favour with sellers at $7 and very few sales. Preferences have changed hands at $1,20 and further shares could probably be placed at the rate. Charbonnages and Queens continue neglected with no sales to report. Jelebus, Olivers, and Great Easterns have changed hands in small lots at quotations.
SHANGHAI, 16th December.- (From Musers, No. el, Murray & Co.'s Piece Goods Trade Report) Piece Gonds. Our Report this time covers an extra long interval, during which a considerable amount of business ling hen done one way and another. The bulk of it has certainly been in the shape of resales amongst the Nativ. s, many of the holders beginning to get nervous at the long continuance of the drought in the Northern Pro- vinces. The only thing that will save the situation now, it is said, is a heavy fall of snow, and the doubt of that occurring is the cause of many, if not most, of the resales that have taken place, the dealers bein content will the fair profits

The position here is un- donbtedly stronger and prices are distinctly higher both privately and at Auction, but in dividual transactions are not of the same magni- tude that usually mark this period of the buying | for Tientsin. There is a lull at the moment in the demand for Szechuen, but as it is reported that enormous profits were made there this year it is anticiated that the buying will soon com. mence again. Although the Hankow market is quiet a steady business is being done, and clear auces all round are decidedly favourable. This is no doubt br nght about by the desire of the Natives to invest their spare rush and take advantage of the present favourable exchange to pay for goods bought on a sterling basis, rates being 3 per cent. above the parity of Silver. There is more en uiry for Indian Yarns, but sales are restricted owing to the firmees of the large holders, prices current here being three to four tar's under replacing cost in Bombay. Japanese pinnings are fairly steady and Local Manufactu- rers appear more disposed to sell at about previous pric, s, no doubt on ao-ount of the weakness of native Colton, which is now quote.l Tls. 17.40 net.
