plenty quarantine, no plague," It is possible that to avoid the inconvenience of being quar antined at Singapore for nine days, some vessels will not tonch at Penang, but will come straight on. On the other hand the full period of detention is not likely to be enforced in every case inasmuch as the Health Officer of the Port has full discretion in the matter and may, if he thinks fit, release a ship before the expiry of the nine days.
The announcement of the death of Mr. Arthur Ilbert will be received with great regret by his numerous friends in Shanghai. Mr. Ilbert came to Japan in the very early sixties as a clerk in the firm of Newberry, Elliot & Co., of which firm he became manager very shortly afterwards. When Newberry, Elliot & Co. closed in Shanghai, Mr. Ilbert joined the lato Mr. Bidwell in business, under the firm of Ilbert and Bidwell, but the connection did not last
very long, and he afterwards established the firm of Ilbert & Co., but withdrew from any active part in 1887. Mr. Ilbert was a thoroughly good sportsman, and always a fore- most figure on the Shanghai turk. He very nearly won the first paper-hant that took place in Shanghai, the finish of which was inside the Hermitage compound, as he arrived first at the gate, where his pony was baulked and refused to enter, so that another rider passed him. N. C. Daily News.
At Shanghai on Sunday, 11th June, shortly. before noon, a boat containing eight blue jackets belonging to H.M.S. Woodlark who were returning from church parade was capsized under somewhat peculiar circumstances, namely, the carrying away of the small awning guy on the
starboard side, thus causing the awning, which runs fore and aft 'the boat, to show its broadside to the wind that at the time was a bit fresh, and so causing a side pressure which the small craft, already Jaden, was unable to with- stand. Boats were lowered, life-buoys thrown, and every effort mado, but had it not been for the plucky conduct of Lieut.-Commander Bar- ton one of the men must have lost the number of his mess, for when rescued by the gallant officer, who dived after him, he was completely exhausted and on the verge of drowning. The remainder of the crew were quickly got on board of their vessel and the ap-turned boat was recovered by a party from the Hermione.---- N. 6. Daily News.
