June 3, 1899]
There were 5 cases of smallpox last week and 1 death.
On Monday afternoon, at the offices o of the Public Works Department, Mr. G. J. W. King offered for sale by auction Inland Lot. No. 1586, which is the plot of land situate in Chater road behindthe Telegraph Company's offices. The contents of the plot are 6,393 square feet, annual rent $118, The upset price was $31.965. Mr. C. H. Grace, on behalf of the Hongkong Club, offered $31,990, at which sum it was knocked down. The lot is separated from the Club-house by a lane, and we believe it is in contemplation to use it for the erection of au annexe, to be connected with the main building by a bridge. The Club appears to have already found its recently erected handsome premises too small for its increasing requirements.
Privates George Griffith and Daniel Jones, of the Royal Welch Fusiliers, appeared before Mr. T. Sercombe Smith at the Magistracy on 2nd June charged with entering the house of
■ Chinawoman at 58, Bulkeley Street, Honghom, on Thursday afternoon and stealing therefrom articles of the value of $37. Complainant said they came into her room and being afraid she ran out. She then saw them come away with the property in question. She gave the alarm and two Chinese detectives captured them. The Chinese detectives having given evidence His Worship asked. Griffith what he had to say, Griffith said he was drunk. -His Worship: You were not sʊ drunk that Jon could not run away when the constables came after you, what made you do it?-Griffith: Wickedness.-His Worship: It is a very serious matter for men like you to go into a Chinese house and disturb the inmates, and not only disturb them but take away their things. The least I can do for you is four months' hard labour.
CHINA OVERLAND TRADE REPORT.
We regret to have to announce the death of Captain W. H. Watton, one of the best known and most highly respected Captains in these parts. He had been in the employ of the Scottish Oriental Steamship Company for some 15 years, plying between Hongkong and Bangkok, and had had command of the Phra Nang for the past nine years, being thus Commodore of the Scottish Oriental fleet. Many of our readers may also remember that he had charge of the pioneer ship of the Northern Pacific. Captain Watton was in ill- health when in Bangkok, and in consequence was granted two or three months' leave, purpos ing to come ashore when the vessel arrived at Hongkong. So ill was he that Chief Officer - Hamilton took command when the vessel left Bangkok. She arrived on the June with her flag half-mast bigh, Captain Watton having suc- cumbed to fever on 1st May. His wife and two children were on board with him, and much sympathy is felt for them in their bereavement. Captain Watton was a member of the St. John's lodge of Freemasons.
