SHANGHAI, 7th May.-(From Messrs. Noël, Murray & Co.'s Piece Goods Trade Report).— There is very little change to advise in market, business, in Manchester makes especial- ly, being considerably restricted by the decline in Exchange and the growing scarcity of supplies. The dealers do not seem inclined to respond to the drop in sterling rates, as they are a very appreciable percentage below the parity of Silver, and as we are on the verge of the opening of the most important of the produce markets, Silk and Tea, there is good reason to expect an advance in It is not anticipated, however, the near future. that Importers will be willing to meet them to the full extent of any rise, as the market for the generality of goods is already below the cost of Particular attention has been paid replacing.
to American Sheetings again, and it is said that practically all the stock in first hands is sold. Several of the transactions reported this week are really re-sales by the dealers, being goods that have been held over on their account through the winter and show a much better chance of coming out now with only a small loss. The Tien- tsin markėt is said to have greatly improved, the goods going into consumption much more freely. Newchwang, too, is progressing more satis- factorily although the market there is still much hampered by the stringency of money. Favour- able advices are also coming in from the River markets, but Ningpo is quiet. Advantage was taken of the Race holidays during the interval.to suspend one of the regular Auctions, but judging by the prices realised at. the Yuen-fong sale nothing was lost. Woollens are still dragging very much in spite of the small quantities offered, and privately there seems to be no enquiry what-
ever.
METALS, 9th May,-(From Messrs. Alex. -In Metals there have Bielfield & Co.'s Report):- been a few transactions as under, at fair prices, the most noticeable change being the rise in the price of Lead noted there. There is very little inquiry, and as home dealers remain firm there appear at the moment to be little chance for improvement in any lines. The following has been done:-200 tons Sohier, N.R. at 121s. Gd., c.i.f., 200 tous Goffins, N.R. nt 1266., c.i.f., 50 tons
