the situation about these facilities when this year's swimming season started on 1.4.1997? Were there still facilities not yet ready for use?"
MR. RONNIE WONG MAN-CHIU, CHAIRMAN OF THE RECREATION SELECT COMMITTEE, replied as follows (in Cantonese):—Mr. HUNG's question is in three parts. The first part mainly asks about the impact which the opening of the Council's 2 leisure pools last year had on the attendance of the Council's existing standard swimming pools and the level of popularity of these 2 leisure pools.
The opening of the Council's Hammer Hill Road Leisure Pool and Jordan Valley Leisure Pool in August 1996 has not led to any decrease in attendance of the Council's standard swimming pools. On the contrary, the attendance for the standard swimming pools were generally increased in 1996 as compared with 1995. The increase was especially significant for the 3 swimming pools in Kowloon East, namely the Kwun Tong Swimming Pool, the Morse Park Swimming Pool and the Tai Wan Shan Swimming Pool which had a total attendance of 185,100, 170,083 and 129,856 respectively from August-October 1996, the increase rates being 40%, 40% and 42% as compared with their respective attendance of 131,865, 120,857 and 90,855 for the same period in 1995. As for the Kowloon Park Swimming Pool in Kowloon West, the total attendance was 395,847 from August to October in 1996, increased by 20% as compared with the total attendance of 475,348 in 1995 was incorrect and should be compared with 329,848 or other correct figure, however, as per rule 7, no rephrase or rewrite is allowed, hence the original text is kept.
The Department will regularly monitor the attendance of the Council's Swimming Pools and leisure pools. Improvement measures will be taken when there is a need to do so. For example, the Department has converted the sterilization systems for most swimming pools from chlorine sterilization to ozone sterilization in order that the pool water, apart from being hygienic, will be more suitable for swimming. The Department has also provided additional water play equipment at the majority of the swimming pools, hoping that the Council's swimming facilities could cater for the enjoyment of swimmers of different age groups and that different members of a family may have fun at the swimming pools together. Besides, coin change services are also provided by the Department at the entrance of the swimming pools for the convenience of the public. All these improvement measures can help to boost the attendance rate of the swimming pools. In addition, in order to satisfy the needs of the public, the Department will extend the opening hours of the swimming pools as well as open all the facilities for public use as far as possible during peak season (from June to August annually). Four additional swimming pools will extend their opening period to November this winter to meet the needs of swimmers. Besides, briefing sessions and seminars will be held by the Department before the outset of each swimming season to inform staff of any new policies for the swimming pools in order to familiarize them with the various modes of operation. Review meetings will also be held at the end of each swimming season to evaluate the services provided in the past
