The Hong Kong-Osaka Tall Ships' Race 1997 is the first international tall ships' race ever held in the North Pacific Region. The race started in Hong Kong, with stopovers at Okinawa and Kagoshima, and finished in Osaka. The aim of the race was to exchange sailing experience among the 4 cities and promote international friendship. The Council's support for the race has confirmed our pledge to promote sports and has enhanced Hong Kong's image as one of the organisers of major international sports events. To our delight, a participant from Hong Kong won the championship in one of the international races.

On district recreational and sports activities, the Council will still aim at promoting 'Sports-for-all' and continue to provide a great diversity of recreational and sports activities to attract more participants and to enrich the leisure time and quality of life of the citizens. Last year, the Council organised a total of 9,250 recreational and sports activities, attracting some 640,000 participants. Looking ahead, the Council will attain the specific development objectives set out in the Five-Year Plan by adding 420 recreational and sports activities every year and expanding the quota for public participation so that 32,000 more people can take part in such activities annually. In line with its aim to enrich city life, the Council will also step up effort to improve the recreational and sports services for the elderly and the disabled, and encourage active participation from different age groups and from all walks of life.

Museums

Last year, the Council continued to organize exhibitions and various promotional activities in museums. The 'National Treasures-Gems of China's Cultural Relics Exhibition' currently staged in the Hong Kong Museum of Art, is a joint presentation of the Council and the State Bureau of Cultural Relics of China. This very rare exhibition of Chinese antiquities has been planned for a long time, with exhibits drawn from the collection of over 30 Chinese museums covering the Neolithic period to the Qing dynasty. The total value of the exhibits, of which over 70% are unique Class 1 national treasures, is in the region of HK$1.6 billion. It is indeed a golden opportunity for the public to see all these national treasures without having to visit different places in China. The exhibition has attracted a large audience. Just during the period 16 December 1997 to 8 January 1998, the number of visitors reached 41,000.

As the facilities of the Hong Kong Museum of Art cannot cope with the increasing need of the local arts community, the Council has decided to seek Government funding for the construction of a Hong Kong Museum of Contemporary Art to enhance its service to the arts community and to
