HONG KONG URBAN COUNCIL

(5) Development of Residential Area
(A) Private Housing
(B) Home Ownership Scheme Estates
(C) Public Housing/Flat-for-sale Scheme estates
At present, Hong Kong has a population of 6.3 millions. With the arrival of new immigrants and the continuous growth of population, the Hong Kong population may rise rapidly to 7.5 to 8.1 millions in the next few years. Therefore, there will be a pressing demand for housing and the problem of housing shortage will be especially serious in the urban area. Housing problem has always been a major concern of the public. Therefore, in reviewing the overall development strategy in Hong Kong, the Government should seriously consider expanding its housing programmes by allocating more newly developed land for residential purpose in area which has a potential for population growth strategically. If the Kai Tak site can be used for residential development, no matter private housing, Home Ownership Scheme estates or public housing estates are built, it will help to relieve the housing problem. Therefore we suggest that the site should be used to build high density residential housing estates.
Mr. Chairman, I hope Councillors can join hands to enrich our city life and would support my suggestions. With these remarks, Mr. Chairman, I support your motion.
