Cemeteries and Crematoria

22. (a) To continue to promote cremation with a view to raising the cremation rate by—

(i) pressing for the early reprovisioning of the existing Diamond Hill Crematorium with modern facilities to include a columbarium, a memorial hall and a garden of remembrance;

(ii) giving wider publicity on cremation; and

(iii) building a columbarium at the Wo Hop Shek Crematorium for the deposit of ashes cremated from exhumed remains.

(b) To ensure maximum usage of existing cemetery land by exhuming deserted graves.

(c) To improve the amenities and facilities in public cemeteries and crematoria.

(d) To continue to look for suitable land which might be allocated by Government as extension to existing private cemeteries.

To continue pressing for an early decision by Government on the enlargement in 1971 of the Council's scope in accordance with the Ad Hoc Committee's report on the future scope and operation of the Urban Council (August, 1966) and the Urban Council report on the reform of local government (March, 1969).
