HONG KONG URBAN COUNCIL

THE CHAIRMAN tabled the following written reply:

"Special barrack quarters for beach guards at Repulse Bay were built four years ago next to the public latrine on Beach Road. The pill box is used as a store-room for life-saving equipment and other beach gear. It would not be easy to find a site in the area to build a store to take the place of the pill-box, the demolition of which would itself be costly. The possibility of improving the appearance of the store and its surroundings will be looked into."

DR. P. F. Woo asked the following question:—

"Complaints have been made that neither the Urban Council Scavenging Service nor the Resettlement Estate Scavenging Service is willing to accept responsibility for clearing away rubbish thrown in the gutters bordering the outer perimeters of resettlement estates; will the Chairman be good enough to take steps to look into and remedy the situation?"

THE CHAIRMAN tabled the following written reply:-

"I understand that the Commissioner for Resettlement proposes to discuss this matter at the next meeting of the Resettlement and Clearance Policy Select Committee."

MR. LI YIU BOR asked the following question:--

"Will the Chairman, Urban Council, consider asking Government whether a broadcast van could be regularly assigned to the Urban Council for purposes of disseminating information and advice on hygiene and sanitation in the urban resettlement areas and estates?"

THE CHAIRMAN tabled the following written reply:-

"Up till a few months ago there was a van, fitted with loud-speaker apparatus, carrying out the sort of duties suggested in the question. It visited Kowloon one day in a week and Hong Kong for another day. However, the equipment is now unfortunately too old to be of further service. A replacement has been ordered, and once this equipment has arrived, the previous schedule will be resumed.

The Health Education Select Committee has begun to plan a programme of work and I propose to refer the question of the use of this van to that Select Committee.

It should be added that there is also a loud-speaker van presented by the Kowloon Rotary Club to the Medical Department. Very valuable use has been made, and will continue to be made, of this van, particularly in resettlement areas, for general health education work."

DR. R. H. S. LEE asked the following questions:-

"Is the Chairman aware of the filthy state of Tsimshatsui Market with particular reference to its immediate environment and the area occupied by cooked food stalls?"

"In view of the prevalence of Typhoid and other gut disorders and the popularity of these cooked food stalls, will the Chairman take active steps to see that the stalls themselves and the area occupied by these stalls are always kept clean?"

THE CHAIRMAN tabled the following written reply

"I understand this question does not refer to the market itself. There is a daily cleansing of all thoroughfares within the market and the stallholders move out their goods from their stalls regularly for a thorough cleansing.

The area round the market is swept five times a day by Sanitary Coolies--twice in the mornings, twice in the afternoons and once at night. In addition, the street washing vehicle and a cleansing squad visits the area once a week.

In spite of this, I regret to say that the cooked food stall area adjoining the market is not as clean as it should be because the cooked stalls create so much rubbish.

Since receiving your questions, the cooked food stall operators have been told to smarten up their stalls and to keep them, and the surrounding area,
