MINUTES.

The Minutes of the meeting of the Council held on 4th June, 1957, were confirmed.

ADDRESS BY CHAIRMAN.

Ladies and Gentlemen. I would like to express a welcome to Mr. Bernacchi on his return to the Council. (Applause).

PAPERS.

THE CHAIRMAN laid upon the table the following papers :-

Report on the work of the Urban Council and Urban Services Department for the month of June, 1957.

He said: In connexion with paragraph 3 on page 2, I feel Members will note with satisfaction the number of favourable comments which I have received from members of the public on the good rescue work being done by beach guards. I also think that Members might be interested to note that the total figure of visitors to the Li Cheng Uk tomb up to 7 p.m. last night, that is for the first nine days on which the tomb was open, was 12,296.

QUESTIONS.

MR. H. CHEONG-LEEN asked the following question :

"Will the Social Welfare Officer advise when the social survey of the Shek Kip Mei Resettlement Estate will commence and approximately when will this survey be completed ?"

THE CHAIRMAN tabled the following written reply by the Social Welfare Officer :-

"It is hoped that the social survey to which Mr. Hilton Cheong-Leen refers, will commence in less than a fortnight from now, and that it will be completed within two months."

MR. H. CHEONG-LEEN asked the following question :—

"Complaints have been made that Shek Kai Lane in Wanchai is being used as a storage dump for old cans, and is probably a breeding ground for mosquitoes; will the Chairman, Urban Council, take effective steps to eliminate this nuisance?"

THE CHAIRMAN tabled the following written reply:

"I am aware of the situation mentioned and action has already been taken by the District Health staff to prevent mosquito breeding after the recent heavy rains. However, I agree that the state of affairs is not satisfactory; in fact, the person concerned has been prosecuted on a number of occasions for causing obstruction to scavenging operations in the lane, and I have already taken up with the Commissioner of Police, who is the licensing authority, the suitability of these premises for the type of licence under which the business is operated."

MR. H. CHEONG-LEEN asked the following question :

"Will the Commissioner for Resettlement consider inviting the Department of Commerce and Industry to second an officer to the Resettlement Department for the purpose of encouraging, promoting and assisting handicraft industries in the Resettlement areas and estates ?"

THE CHAIRMAN tabled the following written reply by the Commissioner for Resettlement :-

"Yes, Sir, but I should like first to obtain the views of the members of the appropriate select committee before approaching the Director of Commerce and Industry on the matter."

DR. P. F. Woo asked the following question :

"Will the Chairman advise when will the rather unsightly military pill-box at Repulse Bay be demolished and decent quarters provided for the beach staff ?"
