HONG KONG URBAN COUNCIL

THE CHAIRMAN tabled the following written reply:—

"No, Sir, the land referred to is not earmarked for a public park. It forms part of the original area of the Kowloon Tsai estate, and I am informed that its development is now being considered jointly by the Company concerned and the Public Works Department.

DR. R. H. S. LEE asked the following question

"If water presents no problem in street cleansing why are the urban thoroughfares not being cleansed more often ?"

THE CHAIRMAN tabled the following written reply

"The urban thoroughfares are cleansed as often as the number of vehicles permits. As I stated in the annual debate last month the approved increase in the number of vehicles from six to twelve this year will, when the vehicles arrive, enable all accessible thoroughfares, etc. in the built-up areas to be cleansed at least once a week."

DR. R. H. S. LEE:-I rise to ask a supplementary question. In view of the fact that there are so many secondary streets and roads still in need of more frequent street cleansing, will the Chairman refer this important question to the appropriate Select Committee for a more realistic schedule to be taken in this matter?

CHAIRMAN :-Yes, Sir. I should be very pleased to do so. The number of vehicles required for cleansing services was considered last year, in connection with the estimates, by the Scavenging Select Committee and by the Estimates Select Committee, and I have no doubt that later on they will be reviewing the position with the same object.

DR. R. H. S. LEE asked the following question :—

"Has any street cleansing programme been drawn up? If not, will the Chairman bring this to the attention of the appropriate Select Committee for one to be drawn up?"

THE CHAIRMAN tabled the following written reply :

"Yes, Sir. The present vehicles are worked two shifts a day on a planned schedule. On Hong Kong Island all main roads are washed once a fortnight, and some side roads and lanes weekly. In Kowloon there is a regular fortnightly schedule in which streets occupied by fire victims receive the greatest attention.'

DR. R. H. S. LEE asked the following question :—

"Is the Chairman aware of the unsightly cooked food stall behind the Kowloon Bus Company ticket kiosk in the Tsimshatsui bus concourse and will he take steps to improve it ?"

THE CHAIRMAN tabled the following written reply :-

"Yes, Sir. It is proposed to include provision for a proper tea canteen in the redesign of the new Star Ferry Concourse. In the meantime I will see what steps can be taken to improve the present arrangements."

MOTIONS.

THE CHAIRMAN moved the following Resolution :—

"RESOLVED—-

(i) Under section 59 of the Urban Council Ordinance, 1955, that the persons whose names are set out in the first column of the attached list shall be the Members of the Select Committees detailed for a period of one month ending 30th June, 1957.
