HONG KONG URBAN COUNCIL

MR. H. CHEONG-LEEN asked the following question :—

"Would the Hon. Director of Public Works advise when will the fountain at the Causeway Bay roundabout have water; would he also consider floodlighting the fountain, providing there will be no danger to traffic ?"

THE CHAIRMAN tabled the following written reply by the Hon. Director of Public Works :-

"The estimates for the fountain were based on the assumption that a pump would be available free of charge from the Shek Kip Mei Resettlement flats which are being converted from a well flush supply to a sea water flush supply.

2. It was hoped that this pump would be available in time to allow the fountain to be in operation by the end of June. Unfortunately the new sea water main supply for Shek Kip Mei is still not in full operation and it is not yet possible to forecast exactly when the well pump will be surplus to requirements at Shek Kip Mei.

3. In view of this, investigations are being made to see whether a suitable pump can be made available from some other source and every effort will be made to put the fountain into operation at the earliest possible date.

4. No provision was made for floodlighting the fountain. If there should be a demand for this, the suggestion could be examined, and the opinion of the traffic department obtained.”

DR. P. F. Woo asked the following question :--

"In view of the excellent work being done by the Family Welfare Centre in Shek Kip Mei, has the Social Welfare Officer considered inviting the Family Welfare Association to establish other centres in Li Cheng Uk and Tai Hang Tung?"

THE CHAIRMAN tabled the following written reply by the Social Welfare Officer :-

"The Social Welfare Officer has long been aware of the efficient and devoted work being done throughout the Colony by the Family Welfare Society at its five centres. The centre at Shek Kip Mei meets a real need, and new centres at Li Cheng Uk and Tai Hang Tung would unquestionably be equally beneficial.

But the Family Welfare Society, like all the other leading voluntary welfare bodies, cannot expand more rapidly than its resources allow. In particular, it depends upon highly-trained staff to maintain the quality of its work, and the amount of qualified staff available in itself puts a limit on the number of centres the Society can operate, quite apart from the question of funds.

For the present, those living in the Li Cheng Uk and Tai Hang Tung Resettlement Estates who wish to seek the advice and assistance of the Family Welfare Society are attending the Society's Shamshuipo Centre at Portland Street. In fact, the Social Welfare Office has been given to understand that the majority of those attending the Society's Shamshuipo Centre do come from the Li Cheng Uk and Tai Hang Tung Resettlement Estates.”

HONG KONG URBAN COUNCIL

DR. E. L. GOSANO asked the following question :

"Certain sanitary nuisances exist in the lane between 72 Junction Road and Fuk Lo Chuen Road, Kowloon. These nuisances are caused by squatters in the vicinity. Will the Chairman take such steps as are necessary to check these nuisances ?"

THE CHAIRMAN tabled the following written reply:-

"Yes, Sir. Steps to abate sanitary nuisances in this lane have been taken on several occasions, and the place is, and will continue to be, kept under special observation."

DR. E. L. GOSANO asked the following question :—

"Is the rectangular area bounded by Oxford Road, Cambridge Road, Hampshire Road and Durham Road in Kowloon Tsai ear-marked as a park? If so, will the Urban Council beautify this waste ground at its earliest opportunity?"
