ENGLAND'S WORLD CUP
TEAM IS STILL
·
UNSETTLED
BY ARCHIE
QUICK
We are only six weeks away from 1950 but the England team is still unsettled. The Selectors are completely undecided who shall · suc- ceed the injured Jackie Milburn as leader; there is considerable agitation among them as to who shall fill the inside forward and wing positions; they are toying with a change of centre-half after Neil Franklin's remarkable record of 38 unbroken appearances; and they are not even happy about who shall be the backs.
To add to the complexities of the situation there has been a sudden and somewhat general outcry for the re-establishment of Tommy Lawton and Stanley Matthews, but while I consider they are the two best men in their respective positions at the moment, are they the young and sprightly lads we want to stand up to the heat and playing rigours of Rio de Janiero in the World Cup next July? The Selectors are in a cleft stick. Their dilemma is whether to plek the best eleven players of the moment to defeat Scotland at Hampden and so win the International Tournament and qualify for the trip to sunny South America or build up a side that will win us kudos thore.
