TEST DRAWN New Zealanders Feel Loss Of Cowie

Leeds, June 14.-For one fleeting moment there seemed a faint. possibility of a result in the first Test between England. and New Zealand here today, but the inevitable happened and the match end- ed in a draw.

New Zealand were set to get. 299 runs in 150 minutes, but time took its toil and when play ended the score stood at 195 for the loss of two second inn. ings' wickels.

The remaining tourists' first innings wicket fell this morning with the total at 341 and England, starting 31 runs ahead, declared their second innings at 267 for four wickets.

valuable time England lost at the start of the day when they failed to dismiss the last New Zealand pair, Mooney and Cowie, for 35 minutes. The sland added 57 and England's lend was restricted to 31.

The dismissal of Hutton to the second bail of the innings came as a shock after the remarkable run of bl acores by England's opening balemon. Attempting a glide, Ilutton fell to a legside calch by the wicket-keeper.

Cyril Washbrook hit a coura- keous

century for England despite the handap of a pulled musele practically throughout the Innings. During the lunch interval he received treatment for the injured leg and upon res suming led England's onchuch on the New Zealand attack nud 153 runs como la 10 minutes, be fore the declarallon. Although he balted with greater freedom. Washbrook could not approach the rate of Compton and Mean.

Maan hit at practically every ball and scured 13 in 25 minutes, Including a six and nine fours. The absence of Cowie reduced the New Zealand attack to only three recognised bowlers and they were hard pressed to keep down the runs during the post- lunch period.

WINS FIRST BIG PRIZE

Ascot, June 14.-The four-day Ascot Royal meeting opened this afternoon in all its old-time pageantry and it was a large fashionable crowd which saw the big prize of the day, the two and a half miles Ascot Stakes, valued at £3,000, fall to the Egyptian, Mohammed Bey Sultan, with his lightly weighted outsider, Hilali.

This five-year old, by Orthodox, and ridden by the apprentice, Frankie Durr, came with a storming finish to win by three-quarters of a length from Now or Never and Cider Apple, which the camera showed to have dead-heated. for second place.

Hilall, who was 40 to 1 with the bookmakers, paid nearly 90 to 1 to win on the totalisator and 25 to 1 for a place. Now or Never started at 20 to 1 and Cider Apple at 100 to 6.
