Basalt Island Skymaster Crash Report Published

'NO PRE-CRASH

FAILURE'

"The cause of the accident was that the aircraft, while flying in very poor visibility and at a low altitude, collided with the high ground at Basalt Island" was the opinion expressed by Mr A. J. R. Moss, Inspector of Accidents, in his report on the accident to the Douglas Skymaster C54B-DC aircraft, which crashed on December 21 while en route from Shanghai to Hongkong. The mishap claimed 35 lives..

In his findings, Mr Moss states that no evidence of pre-crash failure could be established. in any part of the airframe or its engines.
