KIDS AND CASTOFFS RUN

WINNING STREAK TO EIGHT

New York, May 9.-Thone astonishing Athletics to- day ran their winning streak to eight straight games— the season's longest-with two wins over the Detroit Tigers. Connie Macit's ragbag collection of kids and .castoffs, tabbed unanimously for a second division finish in pre- scason calculations, is not being taken seriously just yet, but one American League manager privately said, "Those fellows can steal this pennant because they have got a solid man in each position plus the best young pitching

staff in baseball."

Fewer Hatchet-faced Girls

For London Games

Women's athletics have gained in popularity in Europe, Australia and South America in the last 12 years and so much so that sufficient pressure was brought to bear on the Olympic Committee to add three events to the programme for the London Games,

Standard events

These are the 200 metres dash, the long jump and shot put. hitherto had been the 100 metres dash, the 80 metres hurdles, high jump, discus and Javelin throws and the 400 metres relay.

Favourite for the championship at London will be Holland. The Dutch team will be headed by Fanny Blankers-Koen, 30-year-old Amsterdam matron, holder of four world records and much more feminine in appearance than Mildred "Babe" Didrikson, the greatest all-rounder in women's athletics until Miss Koen started `setting records five years ago.

OLYMPIC DISTANCE HOPE SETS NEW RECORD

Shanghal, May 8--La Wen-ngau, China's Olympic track hope, made his first appearance before the largest crowd since the opening day of the National Athlotte Meet track this afternoon and skyrocketed hopes of his Ardent supporters by establishing a new national record for the 5,000-metre distance in 10 minutes and 8 seconds.

The former national record of 16 minutes 46 seconds was held by Liu Ching-kun, who also participated in the event this afternoon, finishing a poor third. Liu was ex- pected to be the one most likely to extend the record breaker but failed completely to challenge the champion at any time during the race.

A crowd of nearly 40,000 specta- tors watched Lau, the most renza- tional long distance runner in cent years, break into the lead after the Arst round of the track, At the half-way mark, like a lighten- ing flash, Yu Hsi-wei, the 1,500- metro national champion, in 。 supreme bid to sical the show, passed the champion to gain the icad for nearly 1,200 metres..

With only some 1,100 meires loft in the race, Lau suddenly broke loose and set a terrine pace to re- gain the lead, which he never re- linquished, and set a new national record. Yu finished second, some 100 metres behind..
