THE MODERN ANTISEPTIC

BACKSLIDING

THE PRIMITIVE

By Professor J. C. Flugel

in this fortnightly series, broadcast in the BBC's Over- seas Service, noted psychologists relate the results of their observations and analysis of the mental and moral make-up of the Nazis. Professor Flugel, in this article, suggests that

the Nazi code is in reality an expression of regression, and the crude, distorted, values associated with the movement spring from no other source than an inferiority complex that besel Germans after their defeat in the last war..

Psychology has shown that we are all to some extent savages underneath, though fortunately the control civili- xation imposes on our minds is usually effective in prevent- ing the savage in from coming out on top. If for any reason, however, this con- trol is weakened, it is only too easy for the savage elements to reassert themselves.

The long chequered history of the human race shows this plainly enough. But in order to get a clearer insight into the process, let us consider for a moment one of the ways in which we ourselves might conceivably revert to a more primitive level. Our fore- fathers of a few centuries ago firmly believed in the influence of witchcraft. It supplied a simple, but, as we now believe mistaken, explanation of

many things they did not understand. If we ourselves were to revive this belief in witchcraft, the psychologist and anthropologist--would- rightly look upon this change as a mental and moral back- sliding,

Strange Beliefs

Now it is just some such back-sliding that, I think," has happened to the Nazi mind— though, of course, in another field from that of witchcraft. Their reversion to the primi- tive has taken the form of certain strange, unpleasant beliefs in their own power and superiority and their conse- quent right to dominate the wyd-beliefs which they hold with a fervour and con- viction which I think can properly be described as re- ligious in nature.

This may

seem strange when we remember how hos- tile the Nazis have been to every form of organised re- ligion in Germany. But this is because they are trying to put across a new type of

religion of their own, a re- ligion that is absolutely con- trary to the spirit of most peoples, above all, to the spirit of Christianity.

Sometimes they state this antagonism to Christianity quite openly and bluntly, as when in a document circulated to the Hitler Youth, it is said; -"Christianity is a religion for fools and glaves." At other times the Nazis have tried on the existing Churches, as when they say: The context of Christ's teaching must be altered. Thoro has arisen a now au- thority on what Christ and - Christianity really are. This now authority s Adolf Hitler."

Crude Exaltation

J'e-

This immense and crude sense of exaltation which I have ventured to call liglous followed on a period of depression and humiliation. after the German defeat in 1918.

This depression had created an urgent need for fresh ideals. Unfortunately

Hitler was the man upon the spot at the crucial moment, and circumstances, combined with his great skill as a pro- pagandist, enabled) him to impress his own crude dig- torted values on the people whom he led.

ace at the expense of innocent neighbours. By such devices, both in primitive peoples and in modern Germany, immense sources energy and enthusiasm can be tapped-the individual gets carried nway in the vast whirlpool of col- lective emotion. He becomes cap- able of great feats of strength and endurance, but nias, at the cost of an almost total loss of those finer feelings, those

If we look a little below the sur- face, we find that the Nazi mind shows another characteristic of primlilve religion. Savage bellove that the gods Took with a Jealous eye on human happiness, The

up his would-be world dominance on the basis of hate, inferiority and insecurity. The mind of the Nazis mirrors the mind of their leader. From feeling inferior, unsafe and somewhat guilty, the Germans have, as it--world, though it flourished most in were by a sudden convorsion,

for the material hardships which life in a totalitarian state may involve.

This is not the first time in the world's history that a people has felt itself under the protection of a special providence. The best- known example comes from anti- quity. In a remote past the Jews endeavoured to solve their dimeul- tics in much the same way, and perhaps it is no coincidence that the self-appointed chosen people of the present have especially per- secuted the chosen people of the pant. Nations, as well as Indivi- duals, are able to develop a vio- lent jealousy of, those who claim or exhibit a superiority to which they would aspire themselves..

Nazi Ceremonial

To take a more recent exampla from the psychology' of savage, tribes, Chaken, the well-known. Knife thief, led a small tribe to establish a great empire in South Africa. He is reported

to have suld, as Hitler. In cffect says to- day: "Because I am great, I am even as this cloud that has thun- dered, that is Irresistibic. 1, look upon the tribes and they tremble

If I fall upon them, they die." He called his people by n new name, Amozulu, the People of Heaven, thus emphasising their superiority and their supposed peculiar relation to the Diving,

too,

Like many other African peoples, the Amazulu had their

parades and war dances, reminiscent of the great martial ceremonies of the Nazis. There are other examples in plenty, from the records of an Shropology In some cases, as in that of the Messal of East Africa

Often, however, it is thought that the sacrifice of members of other groups will be equally effective, and by a further extension the mere killing involved In

war it- self can be recorded as pleasing to the tribal god. By her wanton destruction of neighbouring peo ples, Nazi Germany ha mado ample sacrifice of this kind.

Lei us remember too in this con- nection that, according to the Nazi mind, it is always those other reo- ples who are guilty, Germany, Hike Hiller himself, has consistently inventel

Greatest Menace

The great religious reformers throughout the Dges, Including many of the Jewish prophets 'and above all Christ Himself, have ron- sistently sought to repince the ele ments of fear and hate that are so dominant in primitivo religion by a more loving relationship between men and the

others.

Nazi Germany has put the clock back and seeks to return to the tradition of a bar- baric age, in which Might is Right,. In which collective egoism is un- checked, in which the supreme duty is blind obedience to a harsh Intolerant authority.

In matters of culture, regression is always casfer than progress. It we accept a code which forbids us to think for ourselves, removes our sense of Individual
