Jolin Cadman was born at Silver- dale, Staffordshire, In September, 1877, and educated at the High School, Newcastle-under-Lyme, fle was apprenticed to the Butterley Cool & Iron Co., but, winning » a scholarship, went to Durham Univer alty where he took the B.Sc. degree with honours. He also became a ecrticated colllery manager and in 1000 was appointed manager of the Silverdalo Collleries.
