Germ Of An Idea That Should Be Fruitful
Open And On Handicap
(By "Birdio'')
AROUND THE 19TH HOLE the other day there was talk of an open tournament for golfors in aid of the Bomber Fund, and tongues were go- ing at quite an enthusiastic rate. It is an appeal- ing idea, and if organised should bear fruit.
The first consideration was whether it would prove more successful if run on the Open Championship lines or on handicaps, and without a doubt it was agreed that the second would open the competition to more players, and thus provide a greater support for the Fund.
On the handicap principle, too, it would solve one of the problems with which I shall deal soon-that of the course courses on which to play.
or
At the outset It is realised that the greater success of the competition would be guaranteed it the Royal Hongkong Golf Club would under- IL In the take the organisation. leading Clubs, with a membership far in excess of any others. But the Fanling

Entrants would, of course, be members of registered Golf Clubs, and the cost of prizes could be de- frayed at an almost negligible con tribution pro rata from the Clubs
concerned.
Professional golfers at Home, led by Henry Culion, are doing a lot ald of the War Fund, while 111 amateurs have made use of their clubs by contributing them as scrap iren.
Here is an opportunity for golfers in Hongkong to make use of their clubs, perhaps to better effect than by giving them in as scrap.

Canuckettes Humbled
(By "Ball Fan"}
PENNANT ASPIRATIONS of the Marauding Mohawks and the Maple Leaf Lassios were given a rude setback over the week-end as both leading teams -wont-down to bitter defeat, making the pay-off scramble more complicating than ever.
A flustered, weäk-playing Canuckettes nine was sent scurrying to the cleaners before a fierce 11-2 Wildcat on- slaught. The ball bombing Indians preserved their mathematical chance in their fight for the men's senior loop pennant by stopping a strong Mohawk threat.
Chung Hwa Maroons retained their league-leading spot in the Junior loop with a close 6-5 win over South China's fighting-mad ball tossers.
