Immediate Effect

An immediate decline in the num-} ber of Chinese arrivals was apparent yesterday when the Immigration Con. Trot Ordinance came into force. Tho total number of passengers on seven steamers arriving from Macao totalled only 278.

The Air Ministry announced to-day that a new Amerienn bomber, which; was flown to England for service with the Royal Air Force, has broken the Atlantic crossing record.

FREIGHT RATES INCREASE

Freight rates between Hong- kong and Calenila have been Increased by 10 per cent, and between Hongkong and. Madras and Hongkong and Hangoon to 20 per cent as from yesterday. The transhipment rates from Hongkong to Calcutta have been increased 20 per cent.

Shipping circles stated that the main reason for the Increase was because the rates from other ports to similar destinations were in many cases double the rgies from Hongkong. Another reason was the Increased demand for space and higher ranning costs.
