After chasing a Junkers plane he had turned to rejoin his squadron when four shots hit the machine. One bullet entered the left eye of the plict, another exploded in a spare petrol tunk, setting the Hurricane on fire, and another wounded the plot in the heel.

When Nicolson pressed the butten he could see his right thumb bilstering in the heat and his left hand, which was holding the throttle open, was also blistering in the flames.
