by a fighter pilot since the war began has been awarded to a pilot who refused to jump from his blazing Hurricane- plane until he had destroyed his enemy.

After chasing a Junkers plane he had turned to rejoin his squadron when four shots hit the machine. One bullet entered the left eye of the plict, another exploded in a spare petrol tunk, setting the Hurricane on fire, and another wounded the plot in the heel.
