AGAIN

TWELVE-YEAR-OLD Peter Cripps turned his merry, blue eyes excitedly towards his special nurse, Sister Louise, at the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, W.C.

He was able to speak again for the first time in ten years. At the age of two his windpipe was affected by a disease of the larynx and be had to breathe through a rubber tube in his neck.

Thanks to two of the hospital's surgeons, Peter now has a real windpipe of his own. A piece of skin takon from his arm was grafted in his throat and

Peter soon began to find his speaking valee,

"Hallo,' ha sald cheerily. "It's wonderful to be able to talk, breathe and drink like other boys. The words are coming easier as the days go by.

to shout and whistle."

Since he was a baby Peter, an unly child, has been under the cure of the Hospital for Sick Children, Surgeons there had operated on him four times. When they gave him a rubber wind-pipe his speech was confined as clucking to what are described sounds.Only his mother could under- stand him.

IIe had two operations. First, the surgeons took a plece of skin ain. long and half an inch wide from his They wrapped it round a rubber

tube and grafted it into his threat, Five days ago the tube was removed and the skin left in place.

Sister Louise said: "It was a won derful operation in plastic surgery.

No surgeon here has ever done such a thing before.

"Peter was tremendously thrilled re-when ho-found he could speak. I had to watch him day and night to see that he did not choke.
