GOVT. IS DOOMED
Premier Advised
To Resign
By H. L. PERCY
(UNITED PRESS" STAFF CORRESPONDENTI
LONDON, May 10 (UP). -The majority of Members of Parliament with whom I{ talked last night adhere to the conviction, that the Chamberlain Government is doomed.
Its survival could be prolonged for only a brief period.
A group of rebel Conserva- tives have alrendy discussed with Mr. Chamberlain the ques! tion of his resignation, and have advised him to offer his services under another Prime Minister.
Three Possible Courses Several courses are open to Mr. Chamberlain if he sees His Majesty the King.
1-He may resign outright, leaving It up to the Labour Party or, if they refuse or fail. to the Liberal Party to form a Cabinet.
2-Ile may lender the, resignation of himself and members of the Cabinet to the King, and form 5.11 entirely new Cabinet,

3-lo may resign and suggest to Itis Majesty that some minent Conservative, such as Lord Halifax or Mr. Churchili, form a new -Cabinet-

SOCIALISTS WILLING TO JOIN NATIONAL CABINET IF CHAMBERLAIN GOES
LONDON, MAY 9 (REUTER).—“REUTER'S" PARLIAMENTARY CORRESPONDENT LEARNS THAT TO-DAY'S DEVELOPMENTS, ACCE- LERATED BY YESTERDAY'S SPEECHES IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS, ARE CONSIDERED TO MAKE THE DEPARTURE OF MR. NEVILLE CHAMBERLAIN ALMOST CERTAIN.
The most likely names from whom the new Premier will be selected are considered late to-night to be Lord Halifax (now Foreign Secretary,). Mr. Winston Churchill (First Lord of the Admiralty and Chairman of the Committee in charge of military operations) and Mr. Lloyd George (Pre- mier in the last World War,) CHURCHILL FAVOURED
For various reasons, including possible complications arising from the fact that Lord Halifax is a momber of the House of Lords, the most likely selection is felt to be Mr.
Mr. Churchill.
Although decision about Labour participation is a matter for Party conference, it is believed that Labour would serve under Mr. Churchill. LABOUR'S REBUFF

LONDON, May 5 (UP)-A prominent nieniber of the Parliamentary Labour Party in formed me to-night that Mr. Lloyd George would be the mosit suitable man for the Premier- ship from the Labour point of view.
Be admitted, however, that such a selection would encoun- ter stiff opposition from the Conservatives, and this opposi- tion would prove decisive.
Labour's next best choice, ha suld, was Mr. _Churchill, but Labour's ncceptance of oßßer under Lord Halifax should not be ruled out.

Allies Tighten Grip In North Norway
NAZIS RETREAT FROM NARVIK
By PETER RHODES
(UNITED PRESS STAFF CORRESPONDENT) KIRUNA, Norwegian Border, May 9 (UP)-The German forces east of Narvik are retreating toward the Swedish frontier.
Only nine miles separate two Allied and Norwegian columns, which are driving down the mountains on Bjordfjuell, where the Narvik railway to the Swedish iron ore mines in Kiruna cuts through the mountains into Sweden.
-Should these two forces close across the valley through which the vital railway passes, the fi Germán garrison in Nurvik will be completely isolated, and h final assault on the port can be expected to follow at once.
Allied Advance
The Ailled and Norwegian forres appear to hove made considerable progress from the north and have : now captured all the ridges dominat- ing the German positions along thei rallway.
