Navy Ships Never Go
Wrong
IN all the ships of the Navy above the size of destroyer there has been only one case of a ship's main engines stopping at sea since war began; and the trouble in that case was medied in an hour and a half.
re-
This fact is the more remarkablo because when war began the ma- chinery of the Fleet was capable of developing a total of 12,000,000 horse- the horse-power power-roughly, developed by the total generating plant in Great Britain,

Yet ships have often been months overdue for rest. The cruiser Exeter, when she fought the Graf Spec, was already a year late for a refit.
The Achilles, too, when she entered the battle of the River Plate, had steamed 124,000 miles since her last redt. Naval ships have been at sca on an average 25 days a month since war began and have steamed 0,000 10 10,000 miles.

One cruiser covered nearly 28,000: miles in the first three months of the wor, chlefiy in the heavy seas of the North Atlantic. Another steamed 12,000 miles in September alone at en average speed of 174 knots.

Have Welsh Accent Now
Of all the effects of evacuation, the strangest may prove to be the change in children's speech.
Cockney children evacuated to Wales, broad- casting the other day, showed in their voices the effect of their stay in their new homes. There was a dis- tinet trace of the Welsh "sing-song" intonation. Some of them had learned a few Welsh phrases.
In other parts of the country similar effects have been ob- served.
The "News Chronicle" put this problem to Prof. Daniel Jones, Professor of Phonetics at University College, London. Ile said:
"I am not sure that the general effect will be very great. But it is extremely interesting, both for those who receive them and for the evacuees themselves, to realise that there are so many dif ferent types of speech in England.
"It will make both sides more tolerant of the speech of others. They will understand that dialect is not so bad after all.
OPERATION SLIP CALLED MURDER
