When a highly placed Finnish officer in Petsamo shot himself with his own revolver, details of the Russian espionage system in northern Finland came to light. It appears that, ho-although com- mandant of the Finnish troops at Petsamo-was himself the chief of the local Russian espionage.

When the Russian invasion began he disposed of ammunition and sup- plies sent from Helsingfors su that the Finns had no weapons.

Apparently it was owing to this trenchery that the Finns were driven out of the Petsamo district early in the war.
