The full story of her fortnight's patrol on the enemy's "front door- step" is as crammed with incident as the whole war may be to other less fortunate crews.

"I hope every British submarine will have as much luck as we did," was all the comment Lt-Commander Blekford would make after he had given his report.

He and his crew had been amazed when their entry into harbour was the acension for the sounding of the sirens of every ship present-among a them two destroyers of the Polish

About an hour later the engines of a large ship were heard on the hydrophones.

The submarine poked her periscope to the surface, and there, stenting past at a good rate, was the Bremen, pride of the German mercantile marine.

Her course took her so close to the submarine that had Commander Bickford decided to fire a torpedo she presented a target he could not have missed.

But the British submarine set about worrying out the procedure re- quired of it under International Law.

Although carmy aircraft were known to be in the vicinity, it came to the surface and made the signal by daylight signalling lamp "stop instantly"-the International Code

signal

The Bremen took no notice.. Commander Blekford at once gave the order to land in order that a shot could be fired neross the bows of the Bremen.

Not until this had been done and

this second warning ignored by the

Bremen could the Salmon legally take offensive action.

The warning shot was never fred. German aircraft appeared overhead and the Salinon hud to dive,

In spite of this she could carly have fired six torpedoes into the Bre men as she dived. But the dictates of international law could not be complied with. So the Bromen went home unharmed.

The Nazis' Fleet Was Out

Less than 24 hours later the Sal- inon was cruising; just below the sur- face when the two German battle cruisers, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, and one of the pocket battleships, ac companied by three cruisers, were observed through the periscope.

Two of the cruisers were the new B-inch gun ships Hipper und Blucher, while the one funnel and conspicuous nirernit erane of the third identified her as the Leipzig,

A few minutes later they were within range. The Salmon Bred six torpedoes on allghtly different courses, thus hoping to disable more than one ship.

The First Torpedo Hit The Leipzig There was a minute's pause, then two terrific explosions told that two other torpedoes had found their mark, almost certainly upon the, second heavy cruiser of the Blucher class.

The other three torpedoes had ob- viously paised between the enemy ships.

The Salmon could not walt to de- termine the exact result of her ot- tack, The enemy were after her. She had to dive deep and zig-zag ot | high speed to elude ühem.

After dark the British submarine returned to the scene of her kill. She found nearly four square miles of sea thickly coated with fuel oil,
