DECLINES

HELSINGFORS, Oct, 8 (UP)The Finnish Govern- ment has declined to send its Foreign Minister, M. Erkko, to Moscow, or the "Now Bar- chtesgaden", as it is called hora.

It is indicated that Finland might sond M. Juho Paasikiva, a former Promier, maintaining that it must bo identified as опе of the north European States, such as Sweden, rather than a small Baltic Stato.

It is rumoured that Russia will demand air floot bases in the Aaland Islands and Hog- land, similar to those obtained at Dagoe, and also that the three islands of Lavansaari, Seiskari and Tytarsaari bo con- verted into Red fleet basos.

BITTER HAND - TO - HAND BAYONET FIGHTING HAS BEEN IN PROGRESS DURING THE NIGHT AND AGAIN TO-DAY BETWEEN FRENCH AND GERMAN FORCES OPERATING IN THE DEEP FORESTS ON THE WESTERN FRONT.

Their sallies broke the silence which reigned on Friday and Saturday. For the first time the French used their trench mortars in this section.

Because the opposing patrols were so closely interlocked, it was impossible for the heavy artillery on both sides to be brought into play. The fighting raged for hours, the thunderous explosions of the trench mortars being punctuated by the intermittent rattle of machine-guns and rifles.

The French used the cover of darkness to penetrate the German entrenchments defending Nenning on the Pettinger road.
