Her Eyes on Rumania
WHAT epposition to the military progress of Germany along the Danube valley could be mustered by King Carol's forces if the Nazis acted?
Here, briefly, are the facts about Rumania's land and air forces. Anny-A standing Army of 200,000 can be increased to 2,000,000 by calling up reservista.
This Army, officered by Rumunions, has a rank and file made up of probably as many as 10 different nationalities, with Rumanions preponderating.
Equipment is a problem. There are Czech machine-guns and rifles in some regiments, French in others; German model anti-Lank Kuns; Czech gas masko.
King Carol, It is understood, has ruthlessly forced reorganisation in the General Staff and is the Army Supply Service, weeding out the inefcient and substituting, younger men for the veterans of previous wars who have failed to realise the need for, ending the legend of Rumania's military picturesqueness and inefficiency.
Air Force-It is estimated that 600 warplanes could take the air. These are mostly of Czech origin, but there are British, French, German, and Polish machines as well.
Munitions-The taking over by Germany of the Skoda Arms, works has been a big blow to Rúmanian rearmament, but my munition factories, ablelded from air attack, have been secretly con- structed in the Carpathians, and the "Ford-Romana" works In Bucharest has been expanded and is working at high pressure producing military equipment.
Oil The bulk of the oil wells are situated well behind the Erst potential war front-that is, on the eastern side of the Carpathians and the Transylvanian Alps in old Rumania and Moldavia.
It is reliably asserted that the most elaborate plans have been laid, and can be carried into effect at half an hour's notice, to put temporarily out of action by explosives and fire every oil well con- trolled by British capital in Rumania.
Minorities-Hungary's claims on Rumania are difficult of settle- ment; they involve the transfer of 2,000.000 Hungarians now living in Transylvania, annexed by Rumania after the Great War.
The German minority of 800.000 who read Nazi newspapers and are to-day ripe for nationalism and "deliverance" constitute an even more serious problem.
Besides other small minorities there are 300,000 Bulgarians, 000,000 Jews, and about 1,000,000 Ukrainians. (in Bessarabia) to complicate matters.
