M.P.s TELL OF CHEAP JAPANESE IMPORTS
A FORTHCOMING change in the Jaw about marking foreign and Em- pire goods going into Britain was in- dicated by Mr. Oliver Stanley, Pre- sident of the Board of Trade, in the House of Commons recently.
He said the Minister of Agricul- ture and he had reached the con- clusion that there were sufflelent) grounds for removing the option to use the word foreign or Empire, Instead of a definite indication of the country of origin.
CANTON, July 18. THERE HAS been much evidence in the past month or two of an increase in the city's population.
It is stated that recent trips. made by vessels between Hong- kong and Macao had carried on an average 1.000 passengers, whilst only about 500 have booked return.
The influx, it is believed, is due to the sharp decline in value of the Chinese dollar. This has made it extremely difficult for refugees to live in Hongkong for an indefinite period on their capital, es- peelally in view of the high cost of
living in the Colony.
Another cause for the return of Canton's former citizens is the dis- turbed conditions in Chungshan, and also bandtry in the countryside sur- rounding the city.
Safer In City ?
Formerly the Chinese had thought It safer to live in their villages than In the city.
Last, but not the least important factor, is the improved conditions in the city itself. Though the situation may still be considered abnormal in many respects, there is no doubt that order is being gradually restored.

CHEAP JAPANESE TEA
(Soc. Plaistow) Mr. W. Thorne asked if Mr. Stanley was aware that Japanese low-priced common ten was being mixed-with-British-Indian and Ceylon tea. What action did he; intend taking to stop the importa- flon of this tea.
Mr. Stanley said he was aware that this tea was blended with Empire tea for the purpose of producing a cheap pocket len, and he had no power to stop the importation.
