Book That Makes Pronunciation Easy

TO PROTECT announcers from criticism the B.B.C. recently published a list of more than 2,000 “recommenda- tions regarding the pronunciation of some British family names and titles."

Henceforth every announcer will have this book be- side him when he is preparing an announcement or News Bulletin. It may also be bought at B.B.C. offices by any listener, price 18. 6d.

Professor A. Lloyd James collected all the pronunciation in- formation for the B.B.C.'s Advisory Committee on Spoken Eng- lish.

People with odd names were invited to co-operate. Actually overy one of the names in the book has been checked up with the people concerned so as to ensure

accuracy.

ORGANISERS of "treasure" or "scavenger" hunts were warned by a Sussex Bench recently when a motor-cyclist was bound over for stealing a door-knocker.

It was stated that Leonard Quick, aircraft engineer, of Toot- ing, S.W., had taken part in a "scavenger" hunt organised by the Cygnet Motor Cycle Club, Tooting.

EMPIRE NEWS

SIR EARLE PAGE. CRITICISED

SYDNEY.

Shrewd judges think that the days of Sir Earle Page as political leader in Austraila are virtually ended. Hia own followers in the Country party recognise the unanimity of the con demnation of his attack on Mr. Men- zies, the new. Prime Minister...

They are already afraid of the losses they would suffer if they go to the country under Sir Earle Page's leadership and force an election at

the present critical time.

Members of the Country party in State Parliaments are everywhere condemning Sir Earle Page for with- holding support from Mr. Menzies.

It is now belleved that Sir Earle will resign the party leadership. If he does a renewal of the Coalition with the United Australia party is re- garded as assured.

Naval Depot at Darwin-The build- ing of the administrative offices for the new naval depot at Darwin under the accelerated defence programme will begin shortly. In preparation

for the work, the naval authorities have taken a large area of privately- owned land in the business centre of the town.

WOOL GROWERS AND STATE CONTROL

WELLINGTON.

While the Poverty Buy and East Coast Sheepowners' Union was oppos ed to the principle of Government control in the marketing of wool, it was suggested at the annual meeting that wool growers might find it ex- pedient to ask for some control by the State.

sume

The reason given in support of this was that all primary products, except meat and wool, were given mensure of subsidy or were controlled to some extent by the Government, and that producers of wool and meat were suffering as a result. SOUTHERN RHODESIA REGISTRATION OF ALL NON-NATIVES
