SERVICES DEFEATED BY CIVILIANS One Major Upset

CLOSING MATCH

OF THE PRESENT HOCKEY SEASON Winners Thoroughly Deserve Victory

(By "The Pilgrim"),

In the last game of the local hockey season, the Civilians defeated the Services by two goals to nil in a fast and closo struggle on the Club| ground yesterday. The winners scored once in each half.

The Initial attacking was done by the Civilians and after ten minutes' pressure, off a long corner hit, G. II. Fowler received the ball and cracked a perfect centre to G. Singh who, in the twinkling of an eye, kad fitcked the ball past Ownon. This was a nice move and thoroughly deserved

goal.

The Civilians were back again with some strong attacking "but | Osman dusited out on several occa- sions to make good clearances from Wall and G. Singh. Except for two or three raids måde by the Services' attack, the Civilinni hälves and for- wards got right into full stride and penned their opponents in their own half for the remaining 25 minutes.

During this linlf, the Civilian inter- mediates played a fine constructive game. E. Fowler, W. A. Reed and R. J. Reed gave of their best. R. J. Reed, at left half, was really sound; he held a watching brief on Gemmel, the Services' inside right. W. A. Reed, the pivot, was intelligent and seldom did he send the ball away to bly forwards without n misalon.

After the dismal weather we had had the past three Saturdays, it was indeed pleasing to see the sky clear up on Saturday and thus allow the Hongkong Lawn Bowls League to get going. Most local bowlers have had their recent practices on heavy greens, and the “fiory” nature of most grounds last Saturday must havo put a number of players off thair stride.

FOST of the malches endéd more or less according to expecta- tions. The only major upset was in the First Division where the Indian R.C., visiting the Kowloon Bowling Green Club, took both points by a margin of 10 shots. The result was one which few would have expected, least of all by the Indians them- selves, who had never won betoro at Austin Rond. But the victory was well-deserved, as the visitors were nothing if not consistent each rink scored 22 shots! Both A. R. Dallal and M. R. Abbas won their games, while A. K. Minu and Adam Holland tied. The peculiar part about this was that at tea-time, which was taken after the eighth head, Minu was the only one of the Indian skips to be leading. He was then 13-5 ahead of Holland, while Dallab was tralling "Bob" Duncan 7-9, and Abbas was 6-7 behind W. Macfarlane. Minu, however, falled 10 maintain his advantage and allowed Holland to score ten shots from the 12th to the 15th heads, and though he led again at 21-17, only

COUPLE of weeks ago, in writ- ing about the Recreio "B", who have been promoted to the First Division as the result of their suc- cess in the Second Division Just year, I expressed the view that the team looked 'a bit weak. This im- pression seems to have been 'con- firmed by their defeat on their home green by the Kowloon C.C., who won by no fewer than 28 shots. Further- more, the visitors did not appear to be particularly formidable, yet the result was never in doubt. Both "Teddy" Fincher and E. Kern and established comfortable leads over J. J. Basto and B. Basto after the first ten heads or so, but F. X. Soares, after a good recovery against Frank Goodwin, was somewhat unlucky to be beaten by three slots. Fincher led "J, J." 12-2 on the ninth and 17-3 on the 14th, eventually winning by 23-14; while Kern, who led B. Basto 14-5 on the 11th, finally won by 25-13. With a three on the 19th, Soares actually led Goodwin by 10-1, but he last a two on each of the fast two heads. Comfortable Victory

THE Craigengower C.C., strength- ened by the return of Charlie Rosselet to the team, visited Kow- loon Dock RC. and won by 34 shots -which represented the biggest win of the day. The Happy Valley rinks, led by the three old stalwarts, U, M. Omar, B. W. Bradbury and R. Basa, were far too well-balanced to be in danger of defeat. Eastern Team Defeat Macao By Odd Goal

Considering the lateness of the season and the heat, good football was produced by the Eastern F.C, and Macao when the two teams met on the Club ground yesterday. The Hongkong team, due to a livelier forward line, emerged victorious by the odd goal in three after leading by 2-0 at one stage of the game.

The defences on both sides played well, but whereas the Eastern halves found time to help their forwards, the Mucao defenders had all their work cut out to stop the Eastern attack, and herein lay the reason for Eustern's victory.

Hsu King-shing, at centro-half for the local alde, was a tower of strength in the middle of the field and plied his forwards with many useful passes. Lep Tack-kee and Ng Kl-ching were cousing the Macro defence a great | deal of worry by their hustling taelles, but for the most part, the visiting defenders proved worthy of the occa- sion.

Alex Airoso, the Macno pivot, per- formed a great deal of useful work, wille Lam Sau-lán and Lobato, the backs, were very rellable. In the forward line, the two players who caught the eye were Collaco

and Gurriero,
