ARCHIE COMPSTON'S
NECK-AND-NECK
WITH COTTON FOR
BIG GOLF
PRIZE
By CHARLES BUCHAN
BOURNEMOUTH, Apr. 1.
No finer send-off for the big golfing season could have been wished for than the tie for first place between Henry Cotton and Archie Compston in the "Daily Mail" Tourna- ment at Queen's Park.
Collon, twice Open Champion, although still only 32 years of age, and Compston, returning to tourna ment play at the age of 48 after two yes absence owing to illness, pro-| vided a huge crowd with a succession to be of thrills. These are Bely repeated in the 30-holes replay to- morrow,
So closely were the pair interlock- ed that the result depended upon Compaton's 12-yard puit on the last green.
I stood next to Cotton, who had finished half an hour earlier and he said: "If he takes three pufts it's all right: If he holes 11. It's just | too bad."
Compstan's putt ended a yard from the hole on n left-handed slope, but he managed to put the ball down safely for the 4 which enabled him to tie with Cutton.
FIVE HOLES IN 10
That was the end of a thrilling struggle which had lasted the whole way round. At the end of the third round the pair were level with 221. Cotton, as he admitted to me, had thrown away a good chance by taking six at the 18th, where he drove into a whin bush.
But when Cotton started the last round with 4. 3, 4, 3, 2 (10 shuts for the first Ave holes) everyone thought the first prize of 1500 safely in his pocket. Compston had other ideas. He began with 17 shots for the saune holes and then got on terms with a great 4 at the long plateau-greened 7th.
VITAL LAST HOLE
Taking three pults on the thi green, Compaion was a shot behind again,-but-he.drew.level.ut the next hole with a 4 ugainst Cotton's 5. He might have gone ahead at the 11th, where Catton hnd had another 5, but again took three putts from the edge of the green.
Both failed to reach the uphill 14th in two shols, and eventually, after. par figures for the intervening holes. they came to the 18th with Cotton, Int leading by a stroke. After a drive he playe: a No. 1 iron from a hanging fie and the ball fell short) of the green. His run-up ended three yards past the Bag and the first puti missed by inches, to make the hole cost 5.
CURTIS FINISHES THIRD Compston's Brst two shots at this! hole took his ball 12 yards past the flag, and I have alrendy told you how he got his
