Pope Pius Appeals For Peace

VATICAN CITY, Mar. 3. THE NEW POPE, in the course of a peace broadcast to- day, said:

"We mean that peace which our predecessor of plous memory coun- selled sa insistently to men, Invoked with such ardent pruyer, and made the spontaneous offering of his life to God.

"That pesce Is the supreme gift of Heaven, which is the desire of all right-minded scula as the fruit of charlly and justice.

"We invite all to the peace of a conselence, tranquil in the friendship of God, the peace of familles united and harmonised by the holy love of peace between Jesus, and finally,

nations in brotherly love, mutually to help in friendly collaboration and cordial understanding for the superior Interest of the great human family under the eyes and protection of Divine Providence.

"In these troubled and difficult hours, we raise a special prayer to God for all the heads of States on whom a very great honour, and the very heavy burden of guiding the people into the path of prosperity and progress repose.

"In this solemn moment, our thoughts go to all outside of the Church, whom it will gladden to know the Pope offers for them to God, prayers and the best wishes of

Il good things."-Retter.

MAGISTRATE'S CRITICISM

The Magistrate's action follows an

incident yesterday, in which it was revealed that five girls who had beeri released by the Court were im- mediately re-arrested by the police and held for banishment.

Calling the practice "highty impro- per," the Magistrale declared that there would be no further convictions for this type of offence in his Court until the "ractice of re-arresting wo- men and scheduling them for banish- ment ceased,

While the Magistrate was making this pronouncement in the Magist- racy, the Full Court of Criminal Appeal upheld an appeal by the Crown against the decision of the Magistrate in dismissing summonses against two Women for keeping brothels. The summonses were re- mitted back to the Magistrate for conviction.
