HOME OFFICE TO SAY WHO OWNS GAS MASKS

Case Awaits Decision

A HOME OFFICE decision about the 38,000,000 gas

masks-issued by the Government, free, to civilians at the time of the crisis-is expected as a result of a pro- secution at Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

Herbert Ward, alias Jones, i nged 50, of Hilltop-rond, Dron- field, Derbyshire, was charged with maliciously damaging a respirator. The Chief Constable, Mr. T. Wells, said that Ward came to Chesterfield on a Satur- day, and was seen deliberately to throw his respirator into a yard and damage it beyond re- pair.

There have, however, continued to be stories of gus maske being found in dust-bins, offered for sale in mars kety, used by children for

A question was asked in the Hous recently by Sir Jahn Meller (Con., Tamworth whether "the Govern- ment propose to take steps to make persons Who negugenby lose be dumage as mosks. which are public property, Ilable to a penalty."

Sir John Anderson, Minister for Civilian Defence, replied that he was considering the suggestion.
